Mongo
Hello all, I have a problem that could effect my birds health. I must leave her with sitter for a week. I am thinking about leaving her outside in her big cage the entire time even at night. I know, it's scarry. I live in a tropical place no cold nights. Here's the problem as I see it. She will NOT go to anyone else. I have been trying to stick train her but she won't even go on the stick for me. Her flight cage is big so it would be real hard and stressful to catch her with biting envolved. She is just getting flight feathers and I really didn't want to cut them but will if need be. What harm do any of you see in this? I can get a cover for the cage at night. It is 2 feet off the ground (varments) Thanks, Lu
LindaMary
I have all kinds of questions, Lu. I am assuming you are talking about leaving her, cage and all, outside at the sitter's location? How old is she? What is she used to? Do you have another cage she could be inside in? Do you have snakes or rats where you live? Those are just starters. I can understand your concerns - I'd feel uncomfortable with this choice, too. Let us know a little more, okay?
Mongo
Lindamary, I live in Hawaii,(no snakes).Sitter is staying in my home. She is in her big cage outside all day as we sit outside on the lanai too.The cage inside is just a sleeping cage not to big. Sometimes we are out till very late and she stays out with us so she is used to the dark. I'm worried about her getting so scarred being there alone and also wind and temp. She is 1yr. thanks, Lu
judygram
I know that Hawaii has no snakes but they have cats and dogs that roam the area and even though she is in a cage they could frighten her real bad and mabe even catch hold of her foot or a wing when she flaps around the cage. On another note, she could be more easily stolen if left outside especially at night. I would rethink this before making this decision.
Lanibird
Aloha Lu, I used to live in Kauai, left after Hurricane Iniki. I had cockatiels at the time whom lived in an outdoor aviary that was attached to the house. The main concern I would have is that with the large population of wild chickens in Hawaii, that your Baby could be exposed to something that would make him sick. Also, rats are very resourceful (not to mention BIG) over there. If you have a sleep cage inside the aviary that your bir will go into that should be OK...How about leaving the bird on your Lanai (is it screened in?) Dave007
All of the above should give you some things to think about. One other thing is nighttime frights. Not be able to fly well can cause accidents in the night. Clipping her feathers isn't a good idea if it's only for this time away from the house. She's used to flying. She's comfortable outside there cause she hears and sees you with her. If something did happen that causes a person to have to go into the cage, things will even be worse if the bird starts to bite. I personally feel that you should leave the bird inside with the sitter. Better safe than sorry.

Luvparrots
I guess some of the big questions are, is your sitter someone familiar with Mongo? Is that person familiar with big birds at all? Has your bird spent the night outside before? Will your bird be safe in the outside cage from things that might frighten it and also from theft? Would you leave a 5 year old child outside in the place your cage is? Is there a way for your sitter and Mongo to get familar with each other before you leave so that your bird could sleep inside in its sleep cage? I know you love your friend or you would not have asked; greys affect people that way. Good luck in finding the best thing to do.
Mongo
Thanks all for your input. I will try and leave her out tonight while I am home and see if anything goes wrong. I will roll her cage into the lanai and cover. The sitter knows birds and has been around this bird but no matter how much she is around someone-anyone she will not go to them without a fight. I think to leave her in her sleep cage the whole time would be too cruel it is just big enough for her to stretch her wings and move around some but not for a long time. Luvparrots
Of course you wouldn't want to leave your grey in its sleep cage all the time. It would be nice if your sitter could move your grey from place to place. Is the outside cage large enough for the sleeping cage to be put inside? Maybe your grey would go into the sleep cage (favorite treat inside) and your sitter could then move it into the house at night. Just a thought, just trying to help.:cheer:
siobha9
Is there no way you can bring the big cage into the house while you are away? even if it was in the way, you wont be there so it wouldnt be a problem. If I were you I would disassemble the cage, bring it indoors and reassemble it.
