Advice on strange diet.

Ive just brought home my new addition to the family an 18 week old baby who is adorable.

I have a big issue with what he has been fed and as I havn't come across this problem before could do with some help.

He has been fed normal seed from the pet store but they say the only way he will eat it is when its been soaked in hot water for 10 mins then drained!!

This is a new one on me and something I would like to change but obviously I want him to eat as well!

He has not eaten anything yet (ive served it as they told me for tonight), Im not over concerned tonight as I know everything is new at the moment.

Can you give me your opinions please on what the solution to this problem could be?

Congrats Caroline,

Try adding soaked pellets to the seed mix and gradually increase the proportion of pellets & decrease the amount of seed over time once you see your baby is eating the pellets.Offer the different foods you feed Keeko & charlie on a daily basis, given time as you know im sure he/she will begin to try new foods. You have the bonus that he/she will see the other two eating various foods/treats so this will help.

Did I miss something:unsure: ? Is your new baby another grey? If so congratulations:) !!!! Where are the pictures???

I soak the seeds for my tiel babies because they arent able to crack the seed yet. I reckon at 18 weeks he should be able to though. I agree with Tracy, since the mix is soaked anyways, add pellets to it and gradually reduce the ratio of seed to pellet.

Yes Siobhan, number three is here, my front room has turned into a bird room! I will have to start charging people to come in soon.

I will give him time to settle in then will try what you both advised. I will post in the nursery section and get some pics when I can.:)

Variety is the key here. Pelletted diets should form the foundation of the diet, but should be supplemented with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as grains and proteins for your bird. A small amount of seed mix can be fed as well, keeping in mind that seeds have some nutritional value and place in the diet but are largely fattening and poorly balanced as a main part of the diet. African Greys are probably best known for their amazing ability to mimic not only the human voice but also an impressive array of environmental sounds.

Post edited by: Talon, at: 2008/10/13 15:38

 • 2 weeks later...

Well, its taken a couple of weeks but we seem to have sorted the diet issue !

Jasper is now on Harrisons and Zupreem fruitblend. The wet seed has gone altogether!

He eats a great varied diet, I have had no problems with his other foods so I am pleased with the outcome.

Wish my other two ate as good as he does now!;)
