Lixit Water Bottles

I've heard pros and cons to the water bottles. My birds have always liked to wash their food and play in their water so I like the water dishes. I do know this is the same reason why people don't like water dishes - because they wash their food in it.

On the particular brand of water bottle I cannot comment.

If you get a water bottle, make sure you re-fill the bottle every day and clean it even though it might not be empty.

Hi, I've used a water bottle for my sunconure, but he kept breaking the lid to the water bottle, snapping it until it would crack and then leak...I'm now only using a water bowel for him and my african grey but that is what the CAG is use to, Sammie the sun conure always baths in the water bowel but at least i'm not replacing the dish, every month like the bottles.

both birds are drinking from bowels, just remember that they need fresh clean water a couple of times or more a day, i always give fresh filtered water in am and then in pm....and then before bed, sam our conure usually ends up bathing in the water at least once daily. not sure how our cag Gabby will bath...handle that obstacle later.

on some website, it talked about how we should only used bottled water not distilled but purified because there is something in water pipes that causes bacteria...have you heard of this? ....where we live we have to filter the water it is disgustingly brownish yellow...suppose to be safe or so they say, but i'm not drinking it and i don't expect our animals too....Can i ask how much time you spend with your birds?

Oh about 5 min a day...

Again, just kidding. I have spent time with my Quaker from the time I get home from work (4:30pm) to bed time (10:00pm)During this time I move him from room to room and I am not handeling him constantly, but I make an effort to have him as one of the flock.

You're doing the right thing by filtering your water especially if it's yellow. If tap water was an issue, my breeder would have told me by now. Here In Texas it's clean and safe enough for animals and humans.

I use the medium size Lixit for my Timneh. Have been using it for about 7 years. He likes it fine and sometimes he does play with it and gets water all over the bottom of the cage. I refill and rinse it out when it gets down to about 1/3 full. I bought one for my Quaker. I just got her about 3 months ago and she is 5 years old. She was in an aviary type setting and never got played with. I have worked with her and she is really getting sweet. Hope I will be able to get her to talk eventually. We had a Quaker for 15 years, he was the best! He died very suddenly and the only thing I can figure is he may have gotten problems from being on too much seed so I switched Rosita, my new Quaker to Roudybush pellets right away. Anyway I didn't mean to get carried away, but yes, we do use the Lixit and love it.

Post edited by: mtcart, at: 2007/04/25 04:44

I just got to this post - I LOVE water bottles!

Just as a thought one day at the feed store, I picked one up (just one made for rodents), since no matter how often I changed Chico's water I worried about bacteria. I was really surprised he took to it right away! I keep both now, his dish and the bottle as I found he drinks from the bottle but still enjoys soaking food/dipping himself etc.
