JakeWade Posted September 17, 2008 Share Posted September 17, 2008 I have a female congo african she is 3, and the last two days she has started to bite blood for no apparent reason, I dont know why and I am not sure how to prevent or tame this type of behavior.......please help me, my Mom is very upset, and I love my bird and my Mom is telling me we might have to get rid of her...Please NO... This grey is 3 years old but how long have you had her? If we had a little more information we might be able to determine what is going on. Suzzique Posted September 17, 2008 Share Posted September 17, 2008 Has something changed recently? There could be meny reasons for a bite. She could just be moody and want to be left alone. Is she molting? Some birds get very grumpy when molting. Also have mom do some reading about greys. Thier is lots of info here. There is no reason to get rid of a bird because of a few bites. she Posted September 18, 2008 Share Posted September 18, 2008 Hi Jake. Try and think of anything changing in your greys living area. Also at your greys age some go through a nippy stage and with the right handeling and training it can pass.Why not ask mum to handle your bird for a while. Also ask mum to read all she can and perhaps read some posts on this forum. I for one will be willing to offer any advice I can as I am sure otherswill too. Good luck. Versatile Posted September 21, 2008 Share Posted September 21, 2008 If it really isn't too late, keep in mind you shhould never scream at your Grey for doing that. That's almost as good as reinforcing it. Try to get a beginner's book/Internet article on Greys from somewhere and read the section on biting. Show it to your parents too. Laurie Posted September 27, 2008 Share Posted September 27, 2008 A few thoughts from me... Versatile is right; as hard as it may be try your best not to react to a bite. Greys are all about reaction and will keep doing things if the behavior brings about a desired result. (Yelling or a firm "No" could even be construed as positive to a grey - silence or turning your back is the ultimate insult.) Secondly, approach your grey in the most non-threatening way possible. Move slowly and quietly. Turn your head to the side, lower your head a little, and squint your eyes. To a grey, this looks friendly. When offering your hand, NEVER approach from the front. Come in slowly from the side or back of the bird. A front approach will put the bird in defense mode. Good luck! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

As the ohers have no doubt said, maybe a change in enviroment, amaount of time spent in cage, or even food could possibly make the bird grouchy. Just try to think is there anything different you are doing? Is it getting enough sleep time? I wouldnt show fear to the bird though, as that will just give it the green light to keep doing it....
