So, anyone since then tried it? What do you think of it? It sounds pretty neat to me- I'm going to try it on my cockatiel and our new bunny! Hehe. TinyTimneh Posted September 16, 2008 Share Posted September 16, 2008 I have tried it, and actually continue to use it. It's worked extremely well for me. Personally, I find it a very concise way to praise, I click as soon as the parrot behaves in a way i want. It's easy for the parrot to understand (no conflict/delay with the good bird etc.) just one click noise and they know right away when they've done it right and they know a treat is coming. It might also be beneficial for shy birds, they can still receive feedback on whether or not they're correctly behaving without becoming intimidated by the pitch/volume of verbal praise. siobha9, i think maybe you might not be getting a lot of clarity iwth just handing out treats. the clicker isn't a reward, but a noise that serves to instantly tell the bird they've done it correctly, and will get a treat for it. domyoburk Posted October 8, 2008 Share Posted October 8, 2008 We use clicker training with Ursula (as taught by the Womach brothers of Birdtricks.com). It is very fun and successful - it establishes a system of communication between you and your parrot. I echo TinyTimneh in everything s/he says. I have used it to reinforce the step-up command, to start teaching Ursula to wave, to encourage her to check out new toys, and she's quite good at target training already (moving to touch the end of a thin dowel with her beak, no matter where we put the stick). I am confident that as long as I have a clicker and some pieces of banana around, I can (eventually!) get Ursula to do just about anything. Birdtricks.com at first seems a bit like a con, but we've been impressed with their teaching materials and happy with our purchases from them (including the clicker). Part of me thinks it's corny and undignified to teach a parrot tricks, but the truth is it gives us something to do together! I can only sit stroking Ursula or speaking to her for so long; this gives a different, stimulating activity to face-to-face. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

TinyTimneh Posted October 16, 2008 Share Posted October 16, 2008 you don't really need instructions. clicker training is the same principle regardless of species. just replace the 'good bird' with a click, followed by a treat. Eventually your bird will think 'AHA! that click means i've done it right and get a reward' and then you're done. i suppose if you wanted to know how to teach specific tricks it might be handy but for establishing the methods of clicker training it's not worth it. goldn1 Posted November 14, 2008 Share Posted November 14, 2008 I'm using clicker training for my B&G macaw, Sammi and she's taking to it extremely well. I found a yahoo group with good step by step instructions and people there to help when you have problems. I haven't ordered a book yet, but plan to so I have more ideas of things to teach her. I got our clicker at a local pet store, it's the one they sell for dogs. I'm thrilled with our results and plan to start training the other birds as soon as I get Sammi a little further along. allena Posted November 16, 2008 Share Posted November 16, 2008 I`ve been using the Womachs system for about a week on a 3 year old Grey. I got to skip a few steps but am pleased so far. He`s learning to wave and shake his head no,so far. I use the clicker and "good boy" both, Thought it may help later on if the clicker wasn`t close. The training system they use is really easy.
