Healed broken wing (input)

Hello,

Brodie (we have said hello in the welcome room) has a healed broken wing it happend with his previous owner.

Just requesting some input/opinions on the questions below. By the owners adnmission they did not take him to the vet. Could the former owners be charged with anything for not taking him to the vet when he was hurt?

It appears to have been a displaced fracture his wing has a zig just where the wing goes down off the shoulder.

Will try when I get home to attach a photo.

Nonetheless, a couple questions (want input).

1.) I do not yet have his "papers" from the previos owners (they have just moved and not managed to find them yet)

So question 1 is: Do I need these papers as some sort of proof of ownership for a vet visit. (I'd like to take him for an exam and a nail trimming. (Is there a reason to get him DNA sexed if we don't plan on breeding him? Such as males or females being more prone to X,Y, or Z)

2.) He has flown down but not up. He can and does flap his wings, but not unless I'm holding him and make a downward motion. If he flaps like this will it hurt the healed fracture?

3.) Do you think the vet will recommend amputation or rebreaking and setting the broken wing?

What are anyones thoughts on amputation or rebreaking as far as his mental health goes?

I appreciate the input on any of the above.

Thanks,

Lisa, Mollie and Brodie...:> .....:)

P.S. Can a bird get a tummy ache?

I can only comment on the broken wing. If it is long healed and he can at least make a good landing when flying down then I wouldn't worry about it. My tiel who is now over the rainbow broke her wing a few years ago do to a night fright. It was badly broken and we didn't think she would live so we didn't take her to the vet. We made her as comfortable as posible to make what we thought would be her last hours as plesent as posible. She sureprised us by not only totally recovering but after a while she started to fly again. Her wings were no longer semeterical but she was happy and could fly again. After our pionus passed away from a staff infection we took Maggie in to make sure she was ok. The vet looked her over and showed me how badly broken her wing had been. It totally snapped off attached to a new spot and healed. He was amazed that she not only lived but could still fly just as well as before. He said that there was no reason to fix what was no longer broken. He said that the stump from where the wing snapped would wear down and you wouldn't be able to tell where it happened. She was in good health and he was quit happy with her.

DNA is really optional. If you really want to know if you have a boy or girl then have it dna'ed. If you don't care one way or the other then just enjoy your new bird!

I didn't have anything more than a hand writen note saying that I had payed for Alex in full. My vet never even asked.

Yeah, you don't need to show proof of ownership to take him to the Vet. I got the same thing as Suzz, just a note.

As for DNA, I had Elmo done because if you know the sex of the bird you know that if they are acting egg bound, if it's a male you know that's not the issue and it is something else. It's not something you HAVE to do, but it is kinda nice to know.B)

Now, the broken wing. I don't think there is anything you can do to the past owner because the wing is healed. I think the injury has to be "fresh" to have a case against them. The only reason I could see an amputation being on the table is if the wing was infected or so badly crushed that there is no hope of repair. Niether of which would apply to you bird. If the wing is functional (he's flapping it) then I can't see the vet wanting to re-break it ether.

Poor baby he looks like he could use a bit of TLC I just don't understand why people buy animals and then when they need to go to the Doctor they don't take them. I noticed you see it like I do. Its exactly like Child abuse. When your child breaks a an arm you go to the doctor and get it set and put in a cast so it can heal properly you don't just leave it and let it heal on its own because it may lose the use of that limb. A bird is meant to fly and when it breaks a wing and you don't do anything about it.you may be taking away its ability to be a bird that to me is the altamate in cruelty. I took my Cockateil to the vet for a broken toe two weeks ago. Of course the vet couldn't do much for him. I tought he might have broken his leg so I wanted to make sure everything was going to heal well.

I'm so glad that you have this beautiful bird now. he finally has someone that will care enough to make sure he's in good health. Do you know how old he is and is he friendly or does he need to learn to trust again.

Welcome to the forum also.

Tycos mom not everyone takes thier birds to the vet when a wing is broken. In our case Maggie looked really bad and we didn't think that she would live much longer. Between the ingery and shock we were sure she would pass. We have seen it before in wild birds that we have found. We were not being crule just honestly not expecting her to live. If it had been something more like Brodie then we would have more than likely taken her in. If anything happens to Alex or Martini they will be into the vet asap.
