babygirl40
Hello, I'm new to this forum. I just put a deposit on a grey. I hope I did the right thing. I know little to nothing about a grey except for what I have been reading on line. I would like to know what should I expect from this little grey in the next few weeks to come? can anyone suggest a really good book for greys. I want to get the most out of my new grey and enjoy him like i have heard out of so many people who have a grey. Is it hard to teach them to talk? what age do they start? any comment is helpful. Thanks:)
TheGreyMiester
There are a number of good books out there but the one I got was fantastic for beginners. http://www.amazon.com/Owners-Guide-African-Grey-Parrots/dp/0793828554/ref=sr_1_20/103-5676864-7653448?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176002799&sr=8-20 Greys can take as long as 1 to 2 years before they talk and there is that chance they may never say a word of English--most greys do talk however. I think its important for both you and the bird to do some research. The link I provided will just about answer most of your questions and will be a great tool to help you with your decision. Guest Monique
Google Bobbi Brinker and there is a Grey book that I have heard lots of good recommendations on. I don't have that one yet - not until my birthday next month anyway . Also there is one called something like "A Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot" that is good on parrots in general. If you have done a lot of research online that is a very good start!! If your Grey is a talkative nature, he or she will learn on his own in his own due time. Just give him/her an enriching environment and talk to her/him a lot is the best way to "teach" how to talk. Also, if you were "really" into training - Dr. Irene Pepperburg has a book out about how she trained Alex (requires a helper). Congratulations on your new baby!! HeatherStrella
I'll tell you my experience. I got Harrison 4~6~06. He was just 3 months old and already talking. He was saying "Hi birdies" and "pretty bird". After being with us for a couple weeks, he stopped talking but picked back up in no time. He's talking up a storm now!! I don't know what's normal..or if there is a normal. :side: Here's a list of what he says...(what I can recall anyway) I love you Hi baby Whatcha doin? Cartoooons!! (when we turn on cartoons) Hiya Hotlips OOOoooooohhhh!!! Hellllloooo??? Hello bird (birdy) Hi Birdies (when we turn on his bird DVD) Harrison is a (very) pretty biiiiiirrrrrd Pretty cool It's OK Yeeeaaaaahhhhhh With the word yeah, he sometimes says it after other phrases...like "Hi baby, yeaaahhhhh"... Yankeebobo
I got that book years ago by Bobbi Brinker that Monique referred to - "For the Love of Greys". Excellent book. Highly recommended reading.

Caspersmum
Hi, From my experience I'd also add just be really really patient, and don't give up. As I'm sure anyone else would say, you'll have some moments when you think you're a dreadful mum, but stick with it cos the good times really outweigh the bad!
