Weaned too early ?

I'm wondering about something, when we got Noah CAG he was around 3 months old is he weaned too early ?

I ask this question because many times he opens his beak, look up and make a noise it looks like like birds in the wild do when they want food. He eats in general very good.

Thanks Zahra

Hi Zahra,

Three months is a little young to be completely weaned but once he isnt losing weight I wouldnt worry too much. It does sound like he is begging, you could feed him a warm spoon feed in the evenings such as oatmeal or baby food if you want to be certain his crop is full before going to bed.

Baby greys are all individuals, there is no set age as to which a grey will be fully weaned. The average age does appear to be around 12 weeks but it may be as young as 10 weeks & as late as 16 weeks. If Noah was eating independently & maintaining his weight then he probably was weaned. As Siobhan suggests offer Noah an evening feed, many greys including older ones really seem to enjoy this ;)

If your grey is still willing to eat baby food, you are probably better off continuing to offer it, along with a variety of interesting foods, including pellets, fruits and vegetables. As Siobhan said, you might want to offer baby food at night to ensure his crop is full. Eventually, you'll find that he'll have eaten his fill of other foods and will refuse to eat the baby food.

Studies have shown that allowing your bird to decide when he/she is no longer interested in being hand fed baby food, creates a more trusting, confident, and emotionally stable parrot.

We got Alex before he was fully weaned. We got him last year right when all the major fires were going on here. The breeder that we got him from was right in the path of one of the fires so we took him early. He was on 2 feedings a day when we got him. He was about 11 weeks. Within a week of us getting him he totally refused to eat the formula. So he was about 12 weeks when he weaned himself. He will still do the feeding action with me sometimes but I think it's more of a lovie kind of thing because he is never trying to get food when he does it. Useally we are cuddling when he does it. If the breeder said he has weaned then you are fine with nothing to worry about.

My second grey Keeko was sold to me fully weaned at 12 weeks but wasnt eating properly at all! It took many weeks to get him to eat properly. I think sometimes the breeders just rush them to sell them on.

He is nearly 7 months now and doing really well, he is bigger than my other grey Charlie who is nearly 15 months. ;)
