zooman
Thanks for the tip ill try and leave those pellets out if im going to eat them..haha maybe its time for them to share their food with me for once though...yeah i would have to say that they keep to their own plates during dinner, i share and give them from my plate and they stay over on their playstand, tiago begs more than zuri does for sure, i think he understands that ive gotten my share so ill leave him alone, tiago believes im hiding the best and wont give up unless hes eating. But i wouldnt let them fly over to me but i guess them being clipped helps a lot. As dor the mutations im strongly against that of any species being deliberatly mutated. I agree god made them the way they are why mess with it for the almighty $. But thats my 2 cents. I took a couple pics of tiago let me know what you think..urgh i took one of the side she hacked to share with his ugly side.
zooman
I think you were right about different lighting in strong lighting he seems duller but in normal lighting seems brighter, ill let you compare to zsa zsa and let me know.
bettyboop
Pat , when they mix the Alex and the IRN , they are not Alexandrines anymore . The word mutation makes me ill. As ZooMan stated God made the perfect Alexandrine. I agree with him M
bettyboop
ZooMan , I think Tiago looks wonderful , his colors are very vivid .I think sometimes our bird look powdery , sort of Greyish , and I understand what you mean about their looking dull , but I do think which type of light they are under makes a difference .He looks great to me , actually he looks just like ZsaZsa. So no more worries Bird Dad , you are doing great . Mary
Tycos_mom
I think your bird looks absolutly beautiful I don't think his feathers look dull at all. he is a very pretty bird you should be very proud of him you obviously take wonderful care of him he doesn't look at all unhealthy in any way. zooman
phew thanks ladies!! i know what you mean about being powdery but it just seemed different but im so glad you both think he looks ok, since both of you have the same bird so it helps hearing that. He is such a camera diva, zuri is not scared but apprehensive and tiago gets excited when he sees the camera. I looked at that site and all i could do is shake my head at it. Your right they wouldnt be an aleaxndrine anymore and what a shame. The alex has been around soo long and i think one of the most beautiful birds available to us, course im biased but i think they are, although they lack a bit of friendliness and why i think people shy away from them, they shouldnt be touched just cause they think the market for them is running dry, the breeder in my area had 6 and they are all gone, id say thats a sign people want them i think anyways. When you start mixing breeds you get problems. You guys should post some pics of your alex's and IRN.

bettyboop
Thank you....My flash sort of bleaches her out a little . She looks slightly darker than the pic , but I think Tiago looks awesome , so pat yourself on the back . Thanks , about wishing my Mom well wishes . This is hard , she has always been so healthy and strong .She is getting older and we are facing some changes .She falls , so now we have a cracked hip. Also a walker , which a month ago she was running circles around me .Sad to watch them grow old . zooman
I know what you mean both my parents are well now but its hard seeing them having trouble when before they seemed invincible. Broken hip is not a good thing for sure. Hope she heals quickly. As for your Zsa Zsa she def looks very cute and i figured the flash didnt do her justice, she is well taken care of i can tell, keep up the good work! I love this thread, I come here all the time and read what the 3 of you have to say to one another about these lovely parrots. Thanks for sharing your alexandrines with us. bettyboop
Thanks Zooman , Tonight for dinner she ate chicken , baked sweet potato, broccoli , and fresh corn on the cob .Now is that a little piggy , or what ? She is so funny , she gave me kisses all afternoon . She is for sure getting much more tame as time goes by . How is the training going with your boys ? I am really interested in hearing all about that and exactly what you are training them to do . It is so cool here , a front came in and our temps this AM were in the 50's it's a miracle for Texas . LOL.... I plan to have Miss Z out this weekend .Did you ever figure out a carrier for the guys ? Well I guess Pat is busy with her new cute Birdie , so that is why she wasnt visiting with us today . I don't want any more birds , two is enough , they keep me busy enough . Sammy said today " LOVE YOU ZSA ZAS " , HE IS SO SWEET , she growled at him ...LOL... Take care , M
zooman
Wow she is a piggy!! Zuri when he gets into the corn on the cob watch out he looks like a corn monster..But at least they are eating healthy and fresh right? Thats great that shes getting more tame, Tiago has gotten back to laying on my chest while watching tv, he actually looked like he was dosing off the otehr night while on me..haha As for training i bought the barbara heindrich dvd and it wasnt worth $30 but it did give me some ideas for training. Ive taught zuri to to wave and also to turn around on command im working on the head shake. Tiago has a verrry short attention span but has the turn around down. I started last winter and kinda got busy this summer but started up again. Its fun and i know zuri loves it, tiago is more of do his own activities type of bird wants to be around you but not always engaged. Are yours like that? Zuri just wants to be on me or around me 24/7. As for carrier its a work in progress im starting to actually use his old carrier and cutting holes out to put the mesh in instead of building one from scratch. Im just waiting for colder temps in case i need the carrier now. I looked around and couldnt find a good way of piecing one together. Yes how she deals with that many birds god love her for it. The way i look at it we have the smartest birds in the greys and the prettiest birds with the alexandrines so im set..haha not everyone would agree but im ok with that. how about you? zooman
Thanks judygram, you should get one haha. They are much underrated birds to keep. When i got mine i was told by the numerous people that they werent their fav birds in the store because of their temperament but luckily one very nice lady there steered me to him and loved him and hes been showing it and ive never regretted getting him. bettyboop
Yes , I agree , we do have the smartest and the prettiest , so we are set . Zsa Zsa wants to be on me all the time , she is as curious as a cat and has to see everything I am doing.. Sammy is happy on his playstand in the same room as long as Zsa Zsa isn't on me , now if she is , then he wants to be on me also , so I am working on this because she dive bombs him when he is on me .She is so jealous , so normally my Husband has Sammy and keeps him entertained.Sammy loves him , and I mess with Sammy during the day while Zsa Zsa is in her cage for at least an hour or so . It is working out , Z was the first bird and she lets him know it . Sounds like Tiago is getting back to his sweet self , that is great . Pat on the back for the tricks you have taught , that is wonderful .You are doing such a great job with those guys . M
bettyboop
Thank you Judy , You should get one , they are awesome birds and so much easier (TO ME) than our Grey . Hugs, Mary
Tycos_mom
I agree sorry I haven't been to busy with my new bird I've been very busy with the ones I already have. The weather here has been pretty nice so I wanted to power wash all my birds cages before the cold weather hits. so I've been Busy takin all the cages out side and scrubing them down Tyco was so funny after I cleaned her cage she inspected every bit of it. I left the towel that I dried her cage with on the floor beside her cage and she picked it up and started wiping her cage with it I laughed I said did I miss a spot or something it was so funny she was trying todo what I was doing cute eh. anyway I got one more cage to do and I'm done what a lot of work it is. but I must say the cages look like brand new again. they are so big I don't know if they all need a cage as big as they have they only sleep in them. I'm home most of the time except for three hours before bedtime 3 days a week so my birds are out from 8am to 8 pm all the rest of the time and they all have huge cages for what I don't know I guess they sort of use them when they don't want to socialize they will go into their cages on their own during the day. but the doors are open a smaller cage would probubly be fine. I always figure for birds bigger is better but if they hardly use them what good are they except that they are allot more work for me.<br><br>Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/10/10 00:
Tycos_mom
I agree with you Judy I really like this thread also its fun to talk about birds that have such a bad reputaion that I think is mostly from people who don't spend allot of time with their birds. Alexis and Indian ringnecks are wonderful companion if you spend a little time with them on a daily basis. I think any bird need daily companionship and if the owners aren't able to do that then they should not have a companion parrot to begin with. Yes there are some birds that need less attention but that doesn't mean that they want less. I spend quality time with all my birds on a daily basis and if I couldn't then I shouldn't have them in the first place. My smaller birds all hang out together they are all freinds with each other so its easy for me to take three at a time and play games with all of them. Tyco and Fergie and Raja I spend time with them all day long they are with me so we talk and play constantly Raja is always right next to me or on me same with Tyco and Fergie Sprout and Luna fly in when ever they want the Cockateil I have is only semi tame so I take him out for a couple 10 minute training sesions everyday. I haven't got my new bird yet but I'm sure she will fit in fine. My Daughter also loves to play with the birds so I have no problums making sure they get their share of one on one everyday I think thats the way it sould be mabie if some people read this thread they will understand about alexis and ringnecks better and their reputaion as bad companions will change. My ringneck is the sweetest little guy and he has the cutest little face I've ever seen I don't know how everyone doesnt'just love them they are wonderful little bird and I wouldn't trade mine for anything. bettyboop
Well , one thing I can honestly say about my Alexandrine , when she came home she was not the sweet little girl she is now .It took alot of time and bitten fingers to get her where she is today .The secret is when they are being hand fed , it has to continue, they have to be handled alot .My breeder who is excellent , had a bumper crop of birds the year Z was born , so after hand feeding , she wasnt handled alot which made her have that famous Alexandrine temperment that they are known for .Females are different than the males , they are the protector of the nest , the chicks etc... I have to spend alot of time daily or else .They are not all as sweet as ours . A friend of mine has a male and a female , the male is much kinder than the female .It isn't because we have done something wrong , it is because they are females and Alexandrines do have strange temperments .Ours are also going into sexual maturity , which is a different ballgame , you will see . Sometimes in our lives things change .As of right now my Mother has a hairline crack in her hip .I am working at my job , going to my Moms to bathe her, cook meals , clean her house wash clothes and then I come home to my home . two birds , two dogs and a husband .This is not something I ask for , I would rather be home all day playing with my birds , so it isnt right to say people shouldnt have had them in the first place , things do change unfortunatly . They are great birds as I said but they do require alot of time to remain tame. I did find out , the Alexandrines and IRN's are not related , I thought that was odd because they look sort of alike . bettyboop
Pat , glad you are back , we were wondering where you are. Hugs, M
Tycos_mom
They are related they are both parakeets and they both have the same rose coloured rings if they were not closely related they would not breed together. and if they did there off spring would be sterile. Indian ringnecks and Alexaderines are very closely related just like CAGS and Tags and who ever told you differntly is wrong.
zooman
Oh cleaing of cages how fun that must have been for all those feathered friends. I try to once a week wash down their cages in one way tiagos gets washed weekly because he wont accept a shower unless its in his cage so after it wet i take that time to clean it, poop comes off muuuch easier. My 2 spend a lot of time out too but the stand just gets dirty instead of the cage and zuri has what ive noticed is normal and hates pooping in his cage so his cage is dream to clean mostly his dander. I know im at my limit and its why i stopped getting birds sure there are many more id like to have but for what? it would drive me to have no other life. With the 2 i can still go out and do things and not have to worry as much. I always just wanted one or two kids so until that happens i have the 1 or 2 birds. Betty i can tell your a great bird mom and i know life sometimes throws a little curveball and your getting that now. Keep your head up and your birds will love ya for life. They'll act a little more needy when you finally get life back in order but after a while they'll settle. When i switched shifts at work they quickly adjusted after many mornings of being woke up with whistling they both are pretty quiet till i get up and then they are maniacs..haha
bettyboop
Zooman , I thank you for the encouraging words .They help alot. It just bothers me that the time I usually am home with the birds , now I am at my Moms, working and when I get home I am exhausted , I just look at my birds and almost dread opening the cage doors. I want to but that first thought of everything I do when they come out is overwhelming .LOL.. Yes, it will return to normal , I just hope nothing is undone with my birds , they have been so spoiled and I hate the fact that just because I have been thrown a curve , they have to pay the price . I wasnt being rude in my remarks to Pat , her remarks made me feel bad .I was just trying to say , things do change for people , things happen that we have no control over ... Thank you again , for your kindness. You are a true Alex friend. Mary
