BlueCounty
Hi everyone, I'm getting Gizmo (my 1st African grey baby) delivered on Tuesday night and I'm trying to learn as much as possible for his/her arrival. I went out today to buy some food today such as honey sticks & pretty bird african grey food. Also bought a swing and some other food treats. What I really wanted to know was, on your first night with your bird, how did it go? Its getting delivered in a carrier cage and will probably have to stay in there until I set the cage up, would you take the bird out or just let it settle? Did your bird let you handle it on the first night? Was it nervous? Gizmo is a 12 week old baby and I'll make sure I upload some pics later this week. Excited isnt the word!! judygram
I would leave him in the carrier until you get the cage set up unless he/she shows he wants to come out. Your bird will probably be a little scared but talk to him and tell him what you are doing before you do it. He will come around quickly enough but just let him let you know when he is ready for handling. It would help if you already had his cage set up but if that is not possible then as soon as you can after you bring him home is fine. I didn't have a problem with Josey when I brought her home but then all greys are individuals and will react differently so play it by ear. Some of the other more experienced members will have more or better suggestions for you I am sure.
nims
When I bought Indy home it was quite late at night. My advice would be to try and get the cage set up before her arrival. Then she/he will then have an option if she/he wants to come out of the carrier or stay in. I was able to handle Indy on the first night but we didnt really do much with her. I put her in the cage and covered it up partially. She was quite nervous but I just gave her her space.
siobha9
I brought Liath home in the early afternoon while my kids were all out. That way she had plenty of time to look around before 3 faces started staring in at her. I did take her out that evening and she didnt want to go back into her cage at all, she was perfectly content to be cuddled. Oisin came home around the same time of the day as Liath, he didnt want to come out, and didnt want to be handled, so we pretty much left him alone till the next day. He is still the more nervous of the 2. You will know by her which way to go. I'd imagine you are so excited it will be hard not to keep her with you 24 /7 for the first while;) The most important thing to do is make sure you have batteries for the camera ready:P

Abernathy
Heya BlueCounty, How exciting for you! I'm super jeanlous, I'm bringing my baby home Saterday. I set up Morgans cage right after we found out we were getting her. Good thing too (for us) because I've rearranged it a hundred times to get it "just right" Good luck with your first night with Gizmo, I hope it goes well

BlueCounty
The cage is being delivered with the bird you see, so it will have to be a long, long 20 minutes in the carrier cage for Gizmo im afraid. I've been waiting ages for the day and its nearly upon us!!
judygram
If the cage is like most of them it shouldn't take too long to put it together, most are fairly simple, just have a couple of screwdrivers ready. I have put cages together by myself so it has to be simple and easy if I can do it.
