UK certificates

hiya

I'm looking to buy a baby grey in the next couple of months, I see a lot of variation in price from private breeders (£300 - £800) some offering just hatch certificates and some also offering dna certificates.

Can someone explain to me what these are for and if a dna certificate is necessary? Would you buy a bird without one? Also whats the reason for such big differences in price, should I be weary of the cheaper birds?

thanks :P

A hatch certifciate will contain details about your bird,D.O.B,ring number (if applicable ) parents details, weaning date,Breeders details etc.. It may look something like this..

A DNA certificate confirms the sex of the bird,In the UK this tends to be carried out by a company called Avian biotech. If the sex doesn't matter then yes you can purchase a bird without it.

Babies will vary in price,if you purchase a parent reared bird it will be cheaper than a hand reared bird.A lot of time & effort goes in to hand rearing & socializing babies.

Post edited by: lovemyGreys, at: 2008/08/20 13:23

thanks for that

with regards to price are there many scammers/bad breeders out there that I should be worried about?

Also does the DNA test show if a bird is healthy or prone to disease or is it purely to find the sex?

No the DNA test only shows the sex of the bird, the Health certificate will show if it is healthy.

Unfortunately if there is a demand for something, in todays corrupt society there will always be scammers. Rule of thumb, if they are looking for money up front, if they have an address in Cameroon, if you cannot see the baby before you buy it, stay away. There are some threads in the nursery room about socialising etc. Have a read of those and they will give you some ideas of the questions you can ask a potential breeder.

No I don't believe it is. it definitely isnt in Ireland. It is a document used for record purposes by the breeder, and also for tax liability. But a small scale breeder, ie some one who only has 1 or 2 breeding pairs may not use them. I dont have hatch certficates for either of mine.
