i jsut had a question about baby bird crops. my grey is currently on one feeding per day. i fill his crop so he can sleep (dont worry i am going to school for animal care and have had YEARS of experience) but i have never had n african grey before. do their crops eventually shrink as they get older? how will i be able to tell when he is full? he dpes eat on his own but i have to hand feed him in order to fill hiscrop before bedtime.

How old is your baby ? A grey will start to refuse less hand formula once they are full, follow your baby on how much formula he wants never force or over feed him,to tell if the crop is full it should be nice and rounded, it should be quite noticeable that there is food in the crop,When the crop is full, it can often be felt. To feel the crop of a bird, you can gently place a finger on the bird's upper chest, right around the area where the neck meets the chest. If you rub the area, you will feel something which feels kind of like a sandbag, being very hard and obviously gritty. This is the crop, and if you check back in a few hours, it will probably have shrunk, unless the bird eats again.

Thank god, I have had our young grey for a year and never knew about this despite coming on these forums.

I was blowing the birds feathers the other day to see if it looked to dry and noticed this large lump like a water balloon in the neck and got very scared.

Thank god for the Grey forums.

Idon't understand why you are still hand feeding your baby at 1 year old most babies are weaned at 16 weeks if your worried about him being full to go to bed why don't you make sure he has a bowl of pellets in his cage at night

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2009/04/16 17:03
