Broken tail feathers and birdie dandruff

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a 6 month old CAG called Indy and last week one of her tail feathers was broken in the middle and fell off. When cleaning her cage this week I noticed another tail feather. She is not plucking or anything but I am wondering if she is starting to moult?

Also she has a lot of flakes (dry skin?) a lot can anyone tell me why this is? I am currently bathing her every other day to help her?

Thanks

Nims

The white flakes your bird sheds when preening or ruffling its feathers is not really dandruff as such,it's perfectly normal & the bathing will help. Baby greys do tend to damage their tail feathers from being over boisterous, playing rough, catching them on the cage bars etc.. again nothing to worry about ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi I have a 10 week old grey who is losing a lot of white fluffy baby feathers and also shedding a lot of white flakes but very small. They break down into dust and I am constantly sweeping and vacuuming etc. I thought to get a air purifier but there is still loads.

I can only assume the fluffy feathers are from a molt. How long will this last for?

Also I have heard many people menton that athing will reduce the dst. Is this true and if so how often can they bathe and what is the best way to do it?

They should have at least 2 baths a week and they need to be soaked good, this will reduce the dust and help their skin from being so itchy when they are molting. Some take their birds into the shower and do it or put some water in the tub and bathe them that way, try it both ways and see which is best for yours. You might be able to do it in the sink, some greys like baths and some don't but they need to bathe whether they like it or not. We do have some threads that will help you with this, just do a search to find them.

The white downy feathers are quite normal & the white flakes are probably loose bits from his feather shafts where his feathers are coming through.

He is not molting, the first molt will happen around his 1st year.

To begin with buy a water mister bottle, gently spray tepid/warm water above his head & let it fall gently over him,as he gets a little older you can then introduce a shallow dish for him to bath in.
