leonidas93
ive had leo for longer than a week now and he still will not step up for me. i can grab him and then put him on my hand but i do not want to keep doing that. do you think i should just carry on picking him up out of his cage and he just needs to gain more trust or should i not get him out the cage unless he goes on my hand? thank you everyone, sorry for being such a worry! Janfromboone
I wonder if anyone who has had a stubborn grey refuse to step-up has tried what I find to work 100% of the time. Tobie can get stubborn especially if he's on top of his cage and I have to leave the house in a hurry. When he refuses or pushes my hand away with his beak, I put my hand under his hocks, heel or whatever you call the joint below the feathers. He feel the pressure and immediately steps backwards onto my hand.

BaxtersMom
My grey was 12 when I got him and he didn't know how to step up so the first couple days I had to grab him out of his cage but it was stressful and not helping trust issues much. I finally got him out and perched him on my finger and made him step up over and over for about 8 to 10 minutes (with small breaks in between) then pet him a little & let him go back to his cage. I didn't want to over due it because I don't think their attention span is that long.. After a few times he knew was I was asking and would do it pretty good. I did this 2 or 3 times a day for about 5 to 10 minutes each session and he learned quick. He learned it in 1 or 2 days. And it made life so much easier! I also would put him on our dining room chair and ask him to step up from that. I read that in a african grey book and it worked perfectly for me. Good luck. BaxtersMom
I forgot to mention every time I asked him to Step Up, I would say "Step Up, Step Up" too so he know what it means. Now he says "Step Up" back to me;)
siobha9
Isnt that amazing that your grey was 12 and didnt know how to step up! I would have thought that would be the first thing any owner would have taught him! That's great that he learned it so quickly though considering he is an adult. Well done;) Siobhan
BaxtersMom
We are learning this bird "stuff" together:P . That is why I say the longer I have him the more I think he was really neglected. Step up is a must it seems and he had no clue. When I picked Baxter up the previous guy told me if I wanted to pet him to use 2 fingers and go down to the top of his head between his eyes and he said NEVER put your fingers below the beak. Poor Baxter. Never got any affection. Untill now{Love-0002011E}
leonidas93
hi guys, sorry i havent replied on this post for a while! havent really been checking my emails. ive had leo for more than three weeks now and he is really getting the hang of step up. i'll usually have to get him away from his cage and put him on this clothes rack he seems to like, but i have now been able to get him on my hand in the cage which is great! ive also got his trust alot more and i can tell because alot of people who come to see him, he always starts squawking and trying to get away from them, even people hes meet a few times. but hes perfect with me he even sits on my shoulder and nibbles on my ear while im trying to play videogames or watch tv lol
siobha9
That sounds like you have made wonderful progress with him already. He is still a baby so he should learn fairly quickly. Be careful with the ear nibbling though in case he gives you a piercing you hadnt planned on
