Mel
My vet trims both the beak and nails of my macaw. I have heard some say this is not necessary. I would like some input as I know in Sept. we will be taking TBird in to see him. I don't know if he would recommend the same for a CAG. Thanks, Mel
BMustee
I do trims at my work and I would say 95% of birds we do not trim the beak, and of the 5% that we do trim I wold say 90% of those trims are done only becase the owner requested to have it done. Most birds don't need it done because they keep their beaks in shape from eating, chewing, and grinding. Most of the birds that NEED a trim have something wrong with them like fatty liver. It doesn't hurt to ave the beak "cleaned up" but if you don't want it done it doesn't need to be. B)
lovemyGreys
As Berna rightly said your bird's beak should not require grooming. The natural wear and tear that your bird puts on its beak during daily feeding, climbing, beak-grinding and playing is usually enough to keep your bird's beak in trim. judygram
I would say that is it mostly due to owners wanting to have it trimmed for looks but they do a good job of keeping the beak in good shape.
