The Phoenix Festival

I went to the Phoenix Festival in our local town today and wanted to share some of the beautiful sights with you all.

 

 

 

 

There are actually some children in wheelchairs inside these!

What is the festival in celebration for and how long has it been observed there?

Thanks Siobhan for sharing these pics with us, I like Dan would like to have a little background on just what this festival is about as I am not familiar with it, is it something just observed in Ireland?

Its actually something just observed in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Legend has it that some time in the late 18th century a hot air baloon crashed into Tullamore. The incident was named the Phoenix because the passengers "rose from the ashes" (in other words they survived!) Each year the festival gets bigger and now it lasts for almost a week. Today was the last day.

 

Its just lots of fun and a tourist attraction now. But we love it;) !

Thanks Siobhan for the information on the legend, looks like it is lots of fun, if I ever come to Ireland for a visit I will have to keep this festival in mind so I can plan on coming during it to enjoy it fully.
