searching
Well, ive had my baby for almost almost a week now. His name is Monkey and he's about four months old. He is still taking two handfeedings, and he hasnt learned to fly yet (though he is not clipped). Is that normal? I've read that they get off their hand feedings a bit earlier, but I thought maybe since he hasnt flown much either and doesnt mimic many sounds yet that he is just taking things slowly. (I use a syringe to feed him, but not with a tube. I just put the little end in his beak so he can taste it and pump it and all, I've read some horror stories about the tube coming off in the crop or tearing it and that is soooo scary to me, and the syringe with no tube was how our bird lady would feed him, so I'm sticking with that. He does like to eat some himself, though.) He's just started refusing some of his baby food and eating more out of his food bowl, and he eats everything you put in front of him, so we're making progress and all. I'm sure I've done everything pretty well feeding him, I've done a ton of reading in many places that makes me feel confident about it. Also, Monkey sleeps a lot through the day. I'm sure he gets plenty of sleep at night, I put him in a quiet room after his evening feeding when he looks sleepy. Is this because he is still a baby, and babies sleep alot? He doesnt ever sleep for more than maybe twenty minutes, just catnaps once in a while. He'll be playing with his toys or trying to fly (he has made a few short hops onto my arm or knee), and then he'll take a nappy-nap. Other than that, Monkey is doing great! I'm attempting to potty train him, and thats coming along, much to my surprise. He is very curious, and he loves all the toys I've made for him. I try to get him to do something new every day, like trying a new food, getting a new toy, meeting a new person, and he does great with it all. I'm so happy!! And he took his first bath all by himself today! It was adorable! And i love this site, it's so helpful, thank you all for everything, I'll keep you posted on Monkey's progress. lovemyGreys
All babies wean at different rates,Monkey is just taking a little longer but nothing to worry about & he will start to refuse the formula & let you know when he has had enough.Be sure to offer him a variety of veggies, fruit, soaked or cooked beans etc..It's far easier to introduce new foods from a young age.Im sure you have read tons of info on handfeeding but i have included a link for you.. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/the-nursery/73409-handfeeding-a-baby-grey.html As long as he is active through out the day, playing & is fully alert then the cat naps are perfectly normal. Greys learn to fly from anywhere from 9 weeks onwards, The first flights themselves often are clumsy and sometimes result in some sort of “crash†landing but they soon become experts. LaceyGrey
Searching: How are you giving Monkey his baths? A bowl of water or? Lacey arrived home 3 weeks ago and she's 4 months and doesn't like bath-time one bit. I run some lukewarm water in the sink with a towel on the bottom and put her in it. I'm looking for other options. Did Monkey like water right away? Lacey is also napping a lot during the day and she sleeps between 10 & 11 hours per night. Congrats on your new Grey! lovemyGreys
Try a spray bottle, aim above her head & let the water fall down over her.If you do a search there are many threads on bathing greys on the forum
searching
Monkey liked the water right away, but it was pretty cold. i gave him some warmer water today and he didnt want anything to do with it. which is weird, everything else has to be warm, i cant even clean his face off with a chilly towel....i gave him a bowl since he was already trying to get into his water bowl, heavy enough that he could step in and out however he liked. i wonder why your Lacey doesnt like it? interesting, the diversity between them all... thanks for the feedback! i will post some pics of Monkey's first bath as soon as i get them in the computer. tabbytai
About the baths: My baby TAG likes it when I perch her in the sink and turn on the "shower" in the kitchen sink. You know... that little nozzle that pulls out and has a spray instead of the stream in the regular faucet. She like it because she goes in it at her own pace. I put it near her and she gets under it. I will caution though that if you try it you can't have it on full blast. The current is too powerful.
judygram
Crystine, a lot of greys prefer the water to be cool or even cold versus warm for baths somaybe your grey is the same way.
