Anmlhggr
Everyday Woody gets 1/8 of a cup of Harrisons Pellets, Nutriphase seeds and something called fruit blend. I put it all in his bowl and that is what he get's all day, just that one bowl. (This is the diet his previous owner had him on). We snack through the day, about 5 almonds and one or two 'power treats' and maybe a thin apple slice. I am wondering though, this doesn't seem like a lot of food to me. He usually finishes the whole bowl by noon (breakfast is at 9:30). Are more snacks ok? How much does your Grey eat? How many times? How much snacking is too much snacking? It just seems to me like I'm starving him..he doesn't look starved, but he is always hungry..could he just be a pig? Thanks in advance!
Lauri
I free feed all day with pellets, dried fruit, nuts, some seeds. I would think if the bowl is empty in just a few hours that there isn't enough. Once I'm home I feed fresh fruit, veggies, pasta, chicken anything that would spoil and I want out for limited times. So guess what I'm trying to say is that I feel they should have access to some kind of food the majority of the day. Their metabolism is much quicker then ours. judygram
That doesn't sound like much for him to eat. I provide Josey with a bowl just for her pellets and it has maybe a third of a cup, enough for several days and she eats it as she wants. Does he have any fresh veggies and fruits? I usually put some dried fruits and nuts in a separate bowl and some veggies and fruits in another bowl. She also eats off my plate at the evening meal. If he is having 5 almonds a day, that seems like too many, I would say no more than 2 should be given, maybe giving other nuts and not just almonds for variety. The pellets are so good for them, providing a bowl of them for snacking on all day encourages them to eat them more. There are some threads in the bird food room that will give you some more ideas of what to offer, have a look thru.
siobha9
I agree, that doesnt sound like enough food. And he isnt getting any vegtables or enough fruit. My guys are definitely pigs:whistle: , and no matter what is in their bowls they will always find room for a grape or a carrot stick. I don't think they can over eat on fruit and veg and are unlikely to overeat on pellets. I would offer those freely all day:) . And I offer lots of people food because I think it gives them variety and has to help make their diet more balanced and more interesting;) . Plus its usually cheaper than bird food so it makes the bird food go farther!

dblhelix
Dry food and water should be available all the time. Fresh foods perhaps offered once or twice per day to reduce chance of spoiling. Kip always has a see mix available (Leach's hook bill mix) with some Harrisons pellets mixed in that I change or top off daily. In the AM she gets an additional bowl with some bean supreme, fresh carrots, fresh broccoli, fresh corn, 2 grapes, 5 pine nuts, 2 almonds, dried fig cut in 1/2 and usually a fresh snap pea. She eats some and flings a lot around! In the evening she is offered a bit of whatever we may be eating...

lovemyGreys
Defrost the veggies & grapes before offering them, try a fruit spear, add different chunks of fruit & hang up for your grey to explore, then the next time make a veggie one.
judygram
Or combine both veggies and fruits on one of those kabob things, the possibilities are endless:side:
