First Question

I took Mini Me for his weekly checkup on Saturday and he's doing EXCELLENT-E

 

I noticed that they re-clipped his wings and as a result, he became a bit clumsier at home. I am wondering about the clipping thing. I mean I would like for him to experience flight, but I also know that for security, he should not be allowed outside. Luckily, we have a 3 door system in our apt. We would definitely notice if he gets out into the foyer and can contain him there.

 

I have read it's great for the psychological development of the bird to be able to fly and am wondering what the word is from ppl with experience in this.

Maybe with a triple doorsystem you are 'protected' enough from him flying away, but how about windows then? Don't you ever open a window and forget to close it?

I am about convinced that it is important for parrots (and all birds) to fly. There are a loads of internet sites on the subject even some that advocate free flight for parrots outside…yeah I know it is a scary proposition, but with the right training who knows. In any case, most of “pro-flight” sites seem to point out that the parrot will be healthier both mentally and physically. In fact I read that biting may be a result of a bird “knowing” that flight is not possible. Many of the advocates of flight maintain that if a bird is threatened in the wild they fly away, parrots with clipped wings can’t so they deal with perceived threats with all they have left…their strong beaks. It is a bit of a controversial subject with some folks having very strong opinions on both side of the flight issue.

Thank you both for your points of view and that cool link, Qweevox.

 

I am still a bit torn, but leaning more towards doing w/out the clip or at least a baby clip and not such an agressive one going forward.
