How to get Timneh out of Cage

Recommended Posts

I have had my Timneh for 2 weeks now and I must say I am very happy with the progress. Slowly, but surely! He recently came out of his cage on his own and jumped off the top and stepped up on a stick for me. I was beyond excited! I want to know how to get him out of his cage without having him come out? He hisses alot when people get near but he did start to eat off my hand. I think the HIss is more of a routine now than anything. He has came out of his cage 3 times total on his own and I want to let him keep doing that but I also want him to know he is safe with me. Please help!

I'd first just talk to him softly over a period of time without trying to get him to do something. Only if I'd feel he trusted me near him, I'd slowly try to let him get used to my hand and the things I want from him.

But, I hope others have better advice for you, because I'm most certainly no Timneh connoisseur.

Congratulations on your progress thus far!!!!

FairY has good advice. Slow itty bitty baby steps one at a time and as he is comfortable with one move to the next. You will need to decide if you want to first teach him to step up on your hand from the cage - or if you want him to step up on a perch from the cage and then come out. Some birds do better onto a perch first - especially if you have aggression concerns. But either way just slow slow steps getting him used to it. You might sit for a week with your hand inside the cage nowhere near him before he accepts that and you bring it closer to him ... and so on ... Just watch his body language for clues as to when to move forward. If you move forward too quickly you can undo a lot of work so you have to force patience.
