I bought myself a congo grey a few months ago and was just wanting a few tips.

I have my bird with me everywhere in the house. he's on my little perch i made him when i eat, on my leg when i'm watching TV or on my shoulder when i'm on the computer. but when i put him on his cage when i want to leave, he goes nuts and starts to look for me. if he finds me, he'll try flying to me (his wings are clipped, so he glides to the carpet). now has he been properly weaned, or is he still looking for his "parental figure"?

i've taught him the up and down command, but i'm still trying to get him to stay on my hand instead of climb to my shoulder unless i put him there. i've tried a few ways, but its not working very well. usually what i'll do is if he starts to climb up my arm i'll make a really steep angle, and if he keeps on trying to climb his way up i get him off balance a little. it works for a minute, then he keeps on climbing up.

those are my two main questions right now. thanks in advance for the help

edit, its not my first bird. i had a double-yellow headed amazon parrot since i was born up until i was 18 when my grandparents had to get rid of it.

Post edited by: dustyb, at: 2007/02/12 22:33

Your bird loves you and just wants to be with you. The only thing I can suggest is that you put him IN his cage and then close the door. When you do so, give him a special treat so he learns that going into his cage is a good thing. Put the treat in his treat cup, do not hand it to him directly.

Regarding the shoulder thing, you do the same thing that I do. I angle my arm so they cannot climb up as easily, but sometimes they succeed anyway. :) I'd love to hear others' suggestions in this area, too!
