Guest
My last post I was asking about how best to get Gizmo to let me touch him. Well I have been working with him everyday now and we are getting much closer. He lets me rub his beak, and in fact reaches out for my finger when I get close for a rub. He even lets me grab his beak (which of cource I am very gently about) I have tried touching his face which he lets me do but very limited, I have also rubbed his neck a little which he doesn't seem to like at all at this point lol. But what is really cool is when he gets really uncomfortable with the touching he very gently grabs my finger with his beak and moves it away, no agression at all just pushes my finger away. When he does this I will typically just go back to rubbing his beak or giving him kisses all along telling him what a good boy he is. He also has spoken his first work, really funny too. The other day he was squaking and being generally loud so I firmly said "Gizmo" and without hesitation he says What? Like he wasn't doing anything. Good stuff, he is saying what on a pretty consistant basis now, YAY so excited!!!

Jane08
Great work and it is good to see you are reading all the signs of when you bird doesn't want to be touched somewhere. Our male grey does that, gently moves my finger away with his beak and then I know he doesn't want to be touched. They speak their own language and we just need to tune into it...sort of like learning a foreign language...hard, frustrating, time consuming...but it all pays off in the end. Guest
You know Gizmo and I connect really well, I give him lots of freedom though. When I am home his cage is open, when he steps up on my finger I ask him if he wants to first and I wait for him to come to me. If he growls or hesitates I will just sit and talk to him. I encourage him to explore (within reason his constant pooping can be an issue) and while working with him daily I know when he is grumpy, or happy, or even blah. I know when he wants attention we just connect so well! Since I wrote the thread Giz has started rubbing his beak on my finger, so excited!!!
