Matt
Anyone here own Cockiteils? I have the dumbest one of all. He hates being held, doesnt step up(even though I have attempted training him/her to do so for the last 4 years.) He used to let my mom and I rub behind his neck, but he hasnt let us do it for the last 2 years. I really wish I could Play with him like I did when i first got him but...I have pretty much given up. siobha9
I have your cockatiels sister!!! She is definitely the dumbest cockatiel!!! She is a living breathing statue. Just sits in her cage or on a chair or wherever I put her all day long. About a month ago I got her a little cockatiel buddy and she acts a bit more like a tiel now! We are in the process of building her an aviary, and I am hoping she might act a bit more like a bird;) Welcome to the forum, I wish you luck with getting your grey! Matt
Do we have that kind of time? LOL (oh and I out the EDITED FOR SPELLING thing) We breed Exptic Reptiles like Red Tail Boas, Ball Pythons, Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons, and Veiled Chameleons. We have a few hundred Snakes, We just sold most of our leopard geckos but we have tons more hatching, and we just had some Bearded Dragons hatch a few days ago. Then we have 2 Veiled Cham's but their not breeding yet, but they will be soon. Oh and its a Family Business, Just FYI. Then My Personal Pets Are: 2 Pet Rats Saltwater and a Freshwater Tank a Teil 3 Giant African Bullfrogs (Pyxie Frogs) (1 male and 1 female are Imported, and the others gender is unknown and he was Captive Bred.) A Japanease Firebelly Newt in the Freshwater tank 3 Dumpys (Whites Tree Frogs) 2 Veiled Chameleons So in total thats 14 Personal Pets. (For Now that is lol) But I am soon adding a Congo African Grey, and a Black and White Tegu in September.(thats when the Reptile show is)
judygram
Thanks Matt for the information about your pets, so your family's business is breeding and raising reptiles, how interesting and we have a few members here who also own reptiles, some are cute critters. Rats, bullfrogs, newts, chameleons, tree frogs and tiels, wow what a combination you have there, I see no mention of the normal housepets like dogs and cats so I guess there are none. So your parents ok'd getting an african grey but would not allow another tiel, how lucky for you as you have made a wise choice, just make sure you know what you are getting into with a grey.:cheer:
Matt
oops! I forgot to mention my Dogs! LOL We have 2 Labs. Ones a black Lab named Jake, and the other is a Yellow Lab named Joey. Joey is the Show style Lab, and Jake is the Feild Style Lab.(Jake is Lean and is very active, Joey is thicker and is more laid back.) But yeah, they approvved the Grey but not the teil cause the teil we have is annoying, we dont wanna add to that. LOL

Post edited by: Matt, at: 2008/05/13 16:
judygram
Wise choice on the dogs, I have two yellow labs myself, such sweet loving animals. Just understand that a grey can be annoying too, it just depends on the circumstances and what your parents call annoying. When it gets to mimicing and talking, some of what it will repeat might be annoying to hear over and over and over, well you get the picture. Matt
Oh and I also forgot to add that I have Always wanted a Companion Animal Like a grey. I rather get one while im young and beable to have him most of my life, or even all of it if he ends up out living me LOL Im 15, and I have all the time in the world needed for a grey. Im Homeschooled so he will always see me, and I will always be talking to him and teaching him new things. Just thought I would add that.
judygram
If you are only 15, I dare say that you will more than likely outlive him than the other way around but the thought is sweet. So Matt, I assume you have done a lot of research on greys and know for sure that is what you want because they are not the type of animal that is easily rehomed if it turns out it is not what you thought it was. We here as grey owners never like to see someone get one and then decide to give it up because it didn't turn out like expected, it is a lifetime committment and will require some time and effort on your part and of course some monetary requirements but if this is truly what you want then you will not be disappointed. Enough on the soapbox, you seem sincere to me and I will help you in any way I can and I know everyone else will too.
Matt
Thanks... I have been wanting one for So long now. And that life time committment is one of the reasons I want one so bad. I think it would be awesome to have a bird thats loves you as much as you love him. I am willing to take time outta my day to prepare food for him, bath him, etc. everything that is required of owning an African Grey. And yes I have done tons of research but I still have TONS to learn. But I would assume that a portion of what I have left to learn comes from experience with the bird itself, and not something that can be written on paper. judygram
Yes you will learn a lot from actual hands on experience and also learn a lot from just being a member here, you have access to many years of experience from the grey owners here and some with more than one grey at a time. In fact joining our forum may have been one of the smartest things you have done so far and you seem like you have a good head on your shoulders and should make some grey a good companion. Matt
Thanks, I wanna get one soon so I can start to love him lol Now, the breeder I may buy of showed me the cage I should buy, and it has a perch on top. Should I buy or make a second perch so i can move him around the house? (and in the shower LOL) I was thinking of making a really sturdy one out of PVC and making the sitting area outta wood.

Post edited by: Matt, at: 2008/05/13 19:
judygram
I have a split level cage with a playtop on one side that is lower than the other side, I think that works better than the ones with the playtop on the very top of the other cages as height can be a factor when dealing with greys, they like to go to the highest point. Another perch that could be rolled around the house is a good idea too, that way you can take him/her with you when you go to another room for a while. We have several threads that deal with playstands that are made out of wood and PVC, just do a search to find them and you will get lots of ideas.
