dragoneyes351 Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Hi Guys When I came down this morning a noticed Jessie is very quiet and hardly touched her food. When I get close to the cage to play with her she just wants to bite. She's also puffed up most of the time Please help:(
parrotlady Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I'm afraid that if she were mine I would book an appointment with an avian vet. The fact that she's not eating and all puffed up are causes for concern. How are her droppings? and is she perching properly with one foot up?
dragoneyes351 Posted May 1, 2008 Author Posted May 1, 2008 yes one foot is up and her droppings are normal
dragoneyes351 Posted May 1, 2008 Author Posted May 1, 2008 well I am quickly off to the vet to get some meds for her
parrotlady Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Good luck. It sounds like whatever it is you've been very observant and caught it right at the beginning. Well done.
judygram Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Good job being very observant of Jessie and you did the right thing, hope all goes well and let us know what you find out.
dragoneyes351 Posted May 1, 2008 Author Posted May 1, 2008 Well just got back and all vets are closed due to a public holiday, so I got her some parrot tonic for her water. Hope its helps untill I can get her to a vet
judygram Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I've never heard of parrot tonic but I would keep an eye on her and do not hesitate to contact the vets by an emergency number if any are available if she gets any worse, keep us informed.
danmcq Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Sorry to hear your Grey is acting ill. Hopefully the tonic will help until you can get her into a vet.
dragoneyes351 Posted May 2, 2008 Author Posted May 2, 2008 I have noticed the little soft piece(don't know what its called) under her beak is like hanging out where its usually tight almost like a hole under the beek.
Falconeer Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 that is how the beak is attached I think. All parrots have that hole under their beak. Can we see some pics of that please?
dragoneyes351 Posted May 2, 2008 Author Posted May 2, 2008 Will see if I can get pics, she is busy eating now (me very happy) so don't want to go close and disturb her now
casper Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I would still keep a close eye on her and give the emergency vet a ring for an appointment if there is any change at all. When is your usual vet back open again? After the weekend? Monitor everything, eating, drinking, poop etc. Dont hesitate. If there is any change get help. Caroline;)
dragoneyes351 Posted May 2, 2008 Author Posted May 2, 2008 She has a abscess under her tongue and will be spending 5 days in hospital. She will be fine now! Thanks for all your help
casper Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I am really sorry to here this Dragoneyes but you must feel a lot better knowing what the problem is and that she is now in the right place to get better. I hope she will recover soon, keep us informed of her progress. Caroline
judygram Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 OMG, I am sorry to hear of her troubles but glad you at least now know what her problem is, keep us informed, I am sure she will be fine.
parrotlady Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 So glad to hear that you acted quickly and got her the help she needs. I hope the next 5 days will pass quickly for you and she makes a speedy recovery.
Acappella Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Glad she's going to be ok. Did the vet say what caused the problem?
dragoneyes351 Posted May 3, 2008 Author Posted May 3, 2008 According to the vet the problem is sunflower seed, yeah believe it or not. Ok but then I have to add that sunflower seed makes up 80% of Jessie's diet which is wrong according to the vet. Well the vet is going give me a complete new diet for Jessie. Thanks for all your good wishes I will keep you updated.
Acappella Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Now you'll probably have to read all about the challenges of getting a grey to try a new food, unless Jessie is the exception to the rule. Lots of info here
Raposa Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Oh my gosh, poor little one, I am so glad you took her to the vet!
dragoneyes351 Posted May 16, 2008 Author Posted May 16, 2008 Sorry for only updating you now but its been hectic. Jessie is back home after his week in hospital and the operation went well
judygram Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Glad to hear Jessie is home and doing well, thanks for updating us:P
Raposa Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Oh, you must be SO relieved to have Jessie home!!! Thanks for letting us know
lisark Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 Hey dragoneyes, good job noticing something was wrong. You probably saved her life, noticing that. How is she now? Is she home yet? Lisa G
