smithie007
I havent ever read the ingredient list but does anyone know if the greenworks cleaner from wal-mart is safe to use around birds?
Hannah_Rae
I use it, it's made by Clorox...it's main ingredient, at least in the multi surface cleaner, is coconut oil...or at least it's derived from that. It's not fumeless, and it's still a cleaner, so I would keep it away from close contact with your birdy, but it's definitely better than other household cleaners. judygram
Just what does it smell like Hannah? I haven't heard of it but it sounds like it might be worth a try.
smithie007
thanks hannah! ill keep that in mind;)
Talon
I use it, it's much safer than regular household cleaners, and much less fragrant. B)
smithie007
The less fragrant part sounds nice. I was hoping to be able to use it in the cage and for some of the non-porous toys. The regular avian disinfecant that i found seems to be too much for me to buy right now. Stupid college student budget!:silly:
Dave007
Cage, in and out-----3 pts water--1 pt vinegar non porous toys---simply wash with soap and water and rinse well.
danmcq
Great tips Dave! :-)
Hannah_Rae
It smells like...plants... kind of like if you were smash up a flower leaf It's very mild. There are like 3 different types of "green works". A bathroom/kitchen cleaner, an "all surface" cleaner, and a toiler cleaner. The only one I have personally used so far is the all surface, but as soon as I need more of the others I will probably switch.
dblhelix
I'm with Dave...no need to spend extra money for a "cleaner". Warm water, a bit of scrubbing and maybe a 1:4 or 1:3 dilution of vinegar to water do the job just fine. With that there is no concern for safety... smithie007
wow i had no clue about the vinegar. that kills bacteria and everything? my caique loves to aim his little tail at things. Its EVERYWHERE:silly:  :woohoo:
Dave007
It'll clean everything that's dirty. Any bacterior that's in the dirt will be killed until the next time the cage needs to be cleaned. Same as everything else in a house that needs to be cleaned. Buying all of those so called bird safe cleaners is insane--just a rip off. People are being taken advantage of. Vinegar and water has been around for ages and as a person owns a bird longer and longer, that person realizes that those products are a waste of money. Like Mark said, a little vinegar and water and some elbow grease goes the trick . same with toys although toys rarely get hardened with diirt. judygram
Vinegar has so many other uses too and its not just for salads either:laugh: now elbow grease is in short supply.
Talon
Yea.....but I HATE the smell of vinegar.:pinch: I'd rather buy the nicer smelling environmentally safe cleaners for my house!
casper
Dave, thanks for the tip, I spend a fortune on cleaning products. Do you use just normal vinegar?
judygram
Normal vinegar Caroline:P
Dave007
There is one extremely bad side effect of using the vinegar----Although the odor won't bother the bird, some will get very agitated and nervous because they think you're getting ready to use them as part of a chef's salad. Greys like eating off the table but they don't wanna be part of what's being eaten on the table.

Post edited by: Dave007, at: 2008/04/26 01:

smithie007
You guys are just too hilarious! I bet Evolet would run if i cleaned her cage with vinegar and then went to fix her some eggs! She would think she's going to be ceasar salad! lol:laugh: :woohoo:
HeatherStrella
I stopped putting CAG in my salads after I realized how hard it was to get the little red feathers out of my teeth. The grey ones aren't too bad, but the red ones...grrrrr.

judygram
Heather you should try the Tag in your salads then, the maroon feathers are the best:laugh:
