Lyric
Hi everyone. We need to get our house treated for termites. I just spoke to the exterminator and he uses a product called Termidor. It is basically the same chemical that is used in flea and tick medicine for dogs. They squirt a liquid in the ground around the house. The exterminator claims it is odorless and it will not harm animals or people. It doesn't get airborne and does not cover surfaces inside the home. I just wondered if anyone out there had had this done to their house and if their birds were okay afterwards? I am very careful of anything I use around my birds so it makes me paranoid to have something like this done. I would just remove the birds from my house but I have so many and the cages are so large, it would be a major undertaking to move them all out and I don't know where I'd move them to anyway. I'd like to know that someone else has had this done and their animals were all okay afterwards... let me know if anyone has experience with this. Dave007
Many people don't have termites and it's difficult to compare different pest and bug control items. Termite control is one that's hard to give out facts about so in this case, I think you should call your vet, explain what's about to happen, tell him location of birds and ask him/her if the chemical you're referring to is safe. Lyric
Thanks for the advice Dave. I don't know why I didn't think of that!
dblhelix
I agree with Dave. Get the chemicals used documented in writing from the vendor, then consult a vet. Also, do research on line as you can. In general, the chemicals used outside "should" not be a major problem for animals inside, but I would absolutely do my homework. According to a quick search I did, the active ingredient in Termidor is "fipronil". Lyric
Thanks dblhelix- I did already look online for information regarding this treatment and of course the mfg claims that it is perfectly safe for people and animals but they don't specifically mention birds. Since it is supposed to be odorless and is actually injected into the ground and the birds will not come in contact with it I am thinking it will probably be alright. I'll check with my vet just to be sure though before I commit to having it done. Termites are a common problem here in the Midwest and I just thought there is a good variety of people on this forum from all over the world that maybe someone on here had an experience with this. Termidor is the latest and greatest technology for getting rid of termites and is supposed to be the most effective. If I have it done I'll add to this post and let everyone know how it turns out. Thanks again.B)
