I have to share my success with Cooper. I have been letting him out of his cage when I am home for a while but he has not stepped up onto my finger and usually he will eventually go back into his cage and then I shut him in. Well today he was out and I got a call and had to leave for a while. I needed to get him back into his cage but he was not cooperating lol big surprise there.

I used a peanut that he loves and told him to step up keeping the peanut out of his reach. first he nipped my finger and instinctivly I pulled away getting frustrated that I did. I put my finger back and he grabbed it again. this time i was ready and kept my finger there telling him " no Coop thats not nice" I then said "STEP UP" and he put out his foot and stepped up. I was so excited. I gave him the peanut and put him back into the cage. Now I will take him out tonight and try to have him step up without putting him back into the cage so he doesn't start to think it is only to go back in the cage. I am open to other suggestions too. I really wanted to share this since it is so exciting for me lol.

That is great news! That is the big one, after this it should be much easier to manage him. We play the stairs game where they step from hand to hand like they are climbing stairs, with lots of excitement and "Good Birdies"! Sometimes they flap their wings to climb the stairs faster. Of course they never get to the top;)

Now I have a question. Am I going to struggle with him when I come back from my trip? I am leaving on Friday for 9 days and that is why I originally was going to wait to get him. I feel so badly that he has all these transitions to go through. DO you think I will have to start all over from scratch? I am okay if I have to but didn't know what you thought. Will he remember me even though I am so new to his life? Thanks in advance.

Donna I think Cooper will remember you but you may have a setback on the stepping up but you can work on it when you get back. Yes it would have been ideal to have waited until after you got back from your trip but that is water over the dam now.:P
