Knight05
My roomie wants to buy an echie? Any difference between red and blue females or the greenish males? is this a good first time parrot? Anything else I should know?

ClaireBear
I own a male Vos Ekkie. The females are known to be more aggressive as they are the nest protectors and they choose the mates. This is not always the case. The males do tend to be more laid back and easy going and seem to speak better. Eclectus have very specific dietary needs that are much different than most parrots. The have a much longer digestive track than any other birds and sometimes are very sensitive to pellets (can lead to toe tapping, picking, and wing flapping) My eclectus eats no pellets except a little bit of zupreem here and there. They are extremely sensitive to dyes and some foods. So if you are ready to cook quite a bit as they eat 75% fresh %25 dry food, then they are great. They are not known to be cuddly birds but are very happy to just hang out with you. My male is 1 1/2 yrs old and a quite extensive vocabulary (if you look down at my popular posts there is a link to his youtube video) His name is Cash. If you want to PM me I can answer a lot more of your questions and guide you to a few specialty Eclectus only sites that give you tons of valuable information. Hope this helps

Post edited by: ClaireBear, at: 2008/04/12 21:

Tari
I have to laugh at the "specail" diet people keep saying Ekkie's need. All birds need to be on that diet. All of mine are. lol
MommaFawkes
Great info clairebear!! the difference is Ekkies HAVE to be, and OTHER parrots do not have to be. They can eat an all pellet diet and survive! Ekkies cant! Whil it is good to give a lot of fresh food to other parrots it is not a mandatory thing like it is with ekkies, and YES i realize it is esential to other parrots health to have fresh food in their diet.

Post edited by: MommaFawkes, at: 2008/04/13 07:
Tari
I am just saying all birds deserve the same diet an Ekkie gets and all of mine do. Tari
I try really hard not to do that on the internet. I keep telling myself "something got lost between the lines" and re read things over and over. Sometimes no matter how you read it thought ti comes out all wrong. lol But ya most people do not cook for thier birds or buy fresh veggies/fruit for them either. But this group tends to do that more then most.
sandra902
merlin's foster mum is fostering a female vos eclectus for me (she should be coming to the monkey house in may) and miss lucy (my ekkie) and miss libby (her ekkie) definitely do have a bit of a competition going on. i am very happy that miss lucy likes to be handled and to be in the middle of everything. i am hoping she will be a good example for mr merlin. and that is what i know about eclecti. time to start reading...

Post edited by: sandra902, at: 2008/04/13 16:
