Feather loss

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, a new member in search of some advice for my new darling Sun Conure "Oscar". We have had him for about 2 months, new parrot owners. The last couple of days I have noticed he has been dropping little feathers everywhere. What I thought was just a natural noise which he has had for a week or so, I now think might be a sneeze? Has anyone experienced this with their Conure and do you think he needs to go to a vet? Also, is a regular vet ok or do they need someone specialised? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:(

Hello Rochelle and welcome to the family, so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and Oscar.

The little feathers he is dropping is a good sign he is going thru a molt, he will shed his feathers and grow new ones so this is the natural process.

It depends on how much he is sneezing and whether he is showing any other signs of illness, like a discharge out of his nares or being listless or sitting with his feathers fluffed up. If he has not seen a vet in a while or never he should have a checkup to make sure everything is ok and yes he needs an avian vet, someone who specializes in birds.

Take a little time and read thru the many threads for lots of useful information and do not hesitate to ask questions you may have. We will do our best to get you some answers and help you in any way we can.

Do you have a grey as most people come here because they either have a grey or are planning to get one. Of course it is not a requirement to be a member but I am just curious to know.

If you have some pictures of Oscar you would like to share with us we would love to see them, we have an other birds room where you can post them.

BTW, I also have a sun conure, she was my first parrot and her name is Sunny.:)

Hi Judy,

THANK YOU SO MUCH !! You have put my mind at rest. He does not have any discharge with what I suspect is a sneeze so I will keep a close eye on him, just in case. I am pleased to hear that the feather loss is a normal process. He certainly doesn't look like he is sick. Eating well everyday, drinking well and just loving lots of cuddles. Once again Judy thank you and I will be sure to keep everyone posted on how he is. Will also add some photos as he is a BEAUTIFUL "I think Boy". They tell me you can only find out the true sex by DNA test, which we have not yet had done.

Once again Judy thank you.

Rochelle

Suns are beautiful and my Sunny is no exception and she is a cuddler too, she loves nothing better than to hang out on my shoulder all the time she is out of her cage. I call her a she but she has not been DNA'd as I don't care what sex she is, she's just mine.
