Lovelylew
Hi everyone. Since I'm a relatively new Grey owner, I have a few questions. The breeder gave me a dried bean mix to cook and freeze after adding mixed veggies. Obi does not seem to eat this at all. I tried giving him oatmeal with chopped carrots and apples in the morning; however, he doesn't seem to eat this either. She also gave me a seed mixture (sunflower, peanut, and other seeds, not sure what they are) and another bag of dried foods of mixed fruits and veggies. Obi will eat this very well. He loves grapes, which I give to him on a daily basis. He seems to eat greens, lettuce mixture and celery tops. My question is if he's not eating the bean mixture (warm) or the oatmeal I've been mixing up for him, what's the point of trying to offer this to him. Is there anything else I should be doing? I also give him a pinch of powdery vitamins she provided. Any advice or opinions would be welcome as this is my first CAG. He's a great little bird, actually big since I'm used to cockatiels - lol - seems very good-tempered, quiet mostly, but is now stepping up and loves coming out of his cage. Have a great Friday - TGIF!
lovemyGreys
Like us Greys need a variety of foods in their diet to ensure that we are meeting their nutritional dietary needs. Beans are high in fiber & are beneficial to the health of our greys, once soaked overnight or cooked try perhaps melting a little red palm extract over them or alternatively a little warm spoonful of baby food to encourage your grey to eat them. A good quality seed mix is fine, but not one with a high percenatge of sunflower seeds. They have a high fat content & are best feed as a treat/reward. i have included some links for you to have a read through. If i can help any more just ask. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/bird-food/59809-complete-veggiefruit-list.html http://www.greyforums.net/forums/bird-food/53831-tips-for-getting-your-grey-to-eattry-new-foods.html http://www.greyforums.net/forums/bird-food/24030-whats-your-greys-diet.html http://www.greyforums.net/forums/bird-food/28994-do-you-sprout-.html#71335
Lovelylew
Thank you for answering. It seems I may have to try and spice up the beans then. I tried adding applesauce and finely cut apples to the oatmeal, but no luck. I'll keep trying and hopefully he'll get some, even if only a little. siobha9
I use tomato puree on the bean mixture. One of my greys LOVES it. The other will eat it if she has nothing else. They both eat the oatmeal if it is very sloppy. I think it reminds them of baby food. For Liath I fed her the oatmeal off a spoon out of a normal bowl at first. She thought it was mine so it had to be nice! Now she laps it up. Watch the head shaking though. She takes some and then shakes her head and splatters everywhere. Believe me if you dont wipe it immediately it turns into cement on the walls
