lovemyGreys
After some research it has come to light that certain large beans may cause toxicities when fed raw. These beans are, Lima, kidney, soy, black, navy, pinto, anasazi,& fava. They have the potential to cause digestive upset. It is recommended that they are cooked to make them digestible for your grey.Another suggestion is to soak them for 24 hours.Personally when i soak a bean mixture i soak overnight for 10 hours, rinsing thoroughly before feeding them to my greys. Certain uncooked beans contain an enzyme inhibitor which may lead to visceral gout in birds. These beans are lima, kidney & soy.Cooking these beans destroys the enzyme inhibitor. siobha9
I have been feeding my birds a mixture of beans for months. I soak them and cook them, but only because I thought they would be tastier that way. Its good to know I was doing the right thing even though I didnt know it.
judygram
I have always fed the beans cooked like Siobhan they would be better that way, I wouldn't eat them raw and figured they wouldn't want them that way either. Thanks Tracy for clearing this up for us as some have asked about the beans. Laurie
Hmmm...I put chick peas in my salad for fiber. Klaus has nosed them around, but hasn't eaten one yet. Anyone know about chick peas? aka garbanzo beans.
lovemyGreys
As long as there cooked this destroys the bean toxin lectin. If using canned beans, most varieties are canned in a salt solution, so rinse well before using.
M2MM
I read recently that you have to cook all beans in a "rolling boil bath" drain and rinse prior to feeding. The article also said to never slow-cook beans as this doesn't remove the toxic elements.
