close call with Egg Binding

As you all may know I breed Exotic Finches and have been doing it for about 4 years now. Well, I got a few new Star Finches a few months back after my female (buddha) died; I figure I might as well have two genetically unrelated pairs sense I'm one of the only people that breeds them in the area. So last night I got home from work around 9 o'clock and I saw that Ghandi's new female was sticking her tail strait into the air and pushing. All the while Ghandi was trying to help her get the egg out. I got her out of the flight and into the hospital cage under a heat light. She wasn't acting sick other than the pushing so I kept an eye on her for a little while. I noticed she hadn't pooped yet so I pulled her out and rubbed a little olive oil on her vent. Not too long later she had "gone" quite a few time and was still acting perky. So, at 1 am I figured she wasn't going to sleep with the heat light on her and Ghandi was still up calling for her so I went ahead and put her back into the flight. This morning when I got up sure enough there was a little egg as the bottom of the cage. Oh Berna! Im glad shes ok!! That must of been so scary!!!

Berna im pleased you had a happy outcome.We are aware of egg binding with our grey's & bigger breeds but we often overlook the fact that are small friends face the same plight.Please keep us informed on the egg's progress

Glad to hear it all turned out well for you Berna, I would have been a nervous wreck for sure, nice tip there with the olive oil, glad everything is ok today.

I was Freaking out when I saw what was going on. After I had gotten her set up I called up a friend of mine that used to breed parrots (she had over 300 birds at one time) and told her what all I did and what else I could do. She said I had it all right and all I could really do was hope for the best till morning. It was pretty funny, she was like, "You know what you are doing, why did you need to call me?" I think I just needed to hear I did all I could.

Sometimes we just need reassurance that we did the right thing and you did Berna, I am so proud of you, besides it probably helped you to sleep that night, didn't it!!!:whistle: :cheer:

It helped me sleep a little...I was still really worried. When I woke up and remembered what had happened the night before I shot up and looked in the cage. I don't think I have ever been happier to see an egg at the bottom of the cage before in my life.
