There's a bunch of info in the food forum, lots of members with picky eaters and what they've tried. You're right to be concerned. My vet told me that sunflower seeds are the McDonalds of bird food! If you navigate around this site you'll find lots of great information.

I believe we do have several threads that deal with the subject of breeding greys, you just have to do a search to find them.

As far as what to feed them look in the bird food room and the first few threads deal with what the diet should consist of.:)

Like Acappella said, sunflower seeds are like french fries for birds. They have little to no nutritional value and are not part of a wild parrots diet. It sounds like your picky eaters are the type that would rather starve than eat something different, you really should read through the bird food room and learn everything you can about coverting diets and foods they need to have in their diet. Also, if yu Amazon is loosing weight but only eats nuts and apples I wold think something could be very wrong. Most Amazons that eat a high fat diet, like a mainly nut diet, would become over weight very easily and develop fatty liver disease. Yours is doing the opposite than what would be expected so I would get him to an Avian vet for a full checkup.

Also, you said your trying to breed your greys and I was wondering if you have any experiance in hand feeding? I'm asking because parrent raised parrots are not as sweet as a hand raised parrots and therefore worth less and will probably end up being bounced from home to home because they don't bond the same way or handle the same. If you really want to breed and you have never hand fed before you need to find another parrot breeder near you to teach you how to do it because just reading about it isn't enough. When it is not done right...esp on very young babies...the chance of killing them is extremely hihigh.

hello..thx guys for ur replies.. i really appreciate ur help.

judygram, ill go and intruce my self and tell about my birds.. thx for asking..

BMustee ,in fact ur totally right about and their feeding habits they would starve till they force me to fed them what they ever like.

a bout my amazon,, in fact he is not eating enough nuts to make him get fat, he would only eat a nut or 2 exactly, and would wait till i give him his apples or aranges if he is fed up with apples, which only happens once in a while. and i think thats why he losses weight..

would it work if i stoped feeding him fruits and forced him to get nuts so i can see if there is any change in weight..( he hates nuts)

about my greys.. they love the sunflower seeds and nothing but that.. which is killing me...

i have hand feed small birds befor and they have grown up perfectly.. if u look at my profile pic,, i had feed the blue love bird since she was 6 days old.. she was like a dog runing after me in the house.

what i'm worried about is the parents them selfs cause they r not being on healthy food..

in fact i love to hand fed babes.

so if u have any recomendation let me know please.

take care
