BirdGuy
I acquired my first grey a few months ago from a local pet store, and when I got him his wings had already been clipped. I don't think they ever let him fly (yeah, I know that sux) so my vet suggested I let them grwo out so he could learn. After three months they have not grown out sufficiently, while my cockatiels wings have grown out twice (he flys all the time). How long does it take a grey's wings to grow? Thanks, Chris
BMustee
It can take over a year for the flight feathers to molt out and be replaced. Birds like budgies and cockatiels molt like crazy and need their wings clipped every few months, but the larger parrots are much slower. I clipped my grey about 2 months after he fledged, so I would say around 20-21 weeks old or so, well, he is coming up on his 1st birthday on the 27th and he has yet to loose one flight feather. judygram
Chris, why don't you introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little more about you and your grey.
Ronda477
Yes I agree with Berna, the flight feathers can take anywhere from 3 months on some birds to a year with others. So you may just have to wait a little bit, but when they grow in look out lol. He'll have to learn to fly. Keep us updated and introduce yourself as Judy said in our Welcome room and tell us if you have any more fids!

BMustee
Just to add to the subject... Breeders don't need to clip, it's pretty much their choice if they let them learn to fly or not, but in the pet store an unclipped baby bird could get into a LOT of problems. In my store for example, they could go flying on top of other bird cages and get their feet bitten off, they could fly out the doors and be hit by a car or some other outside hazard, or they could fly into the puppy department and land in a pen and get torn into bits. I hear people time to time talking under their breaths about how "all those poor birds can't fly" but it is for their own protection...and in the case of Oscar the Buffons Macaw, the safty of the customers as well. (I could just see that green demon dive bombing people.)
