Lysis
Some of the avian books recommend 20% fresh fruits and vegetables... now, I'm wondering, how do you all figure out how much of everything but pellets do you give? It seems random to me -- how big is too big a slice of sweet potato? How much rice is too much? I know that all the fresh stuff has a higher water content, so this has to count for something. Still working on the veggies. She will only eat the occasional sweet pea in the pod. She just likes the sweet stuff too much, but at least her cholesterol is normal. I've bought a scale, just to keep tract of things. Thanks all! Liz
Makena
Makena gets about 1/2 cup of fresh stuff 3 times a day. And he usually polishes it all off! He loves anything in a pod (peas, green beans, edamame) and papayas. I make a big batch of whatever I have around about every 2-3 days. It usually consists of about 75% veggies and 25% fruits. It's always different stuff, depending on what looks good at the store and what's on sale on the frozen aisle. Whenever I give him his bowl of food he immediately goes through it and takes out everything he doesn't like and throws it on the floor! Then he starts eating... What a turkey!! We only give white foods (white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes) as a treat. If Makena had his way his diet would consist of 100% dried noodles! I usually always give him a little bit of whole grain bread, beans, popcorn, etc. if I am eating some but I don't typically add it to his mix. Every grey is different and everyone feeds them a little differently, you just have to find what works! Good luck!
lovemyGreys
Liz there is no set rule on the quantity of food to feed. Each grey is different some will munch all day long others will eat morning, afternoon & evening.Try feeding mixed vegetables in the morning when greys are at their hungriest.I have 5 greys & my general rule is a handful/small cupful each,so if I'm doing rice ill do 5 small cupfuls. If you just fill a standard size bowl that is more than enough,as Makena said they will throw the majority on the floor & eat what they like It is a bit hit & miss until you discover what foods your grey loves
MommaFawkes
I dont really keep track, I just cook up a bunch of food a few times a day and split it between my flock. Freeze the rest for another day! They always get their pellets first though!
lovemyGreys
when you have more than one bird it is easier to make a batch up & freeze some i agree MommaFawkes
