sumaya
I have always heard that.... you should always get a parrot at the youngest age possible in order to train it and bond with it. I bought Beekers when she was 6 months old... my Q is... can a person bond closely with a grey at any age, or MUST it start from a hand fed baby? Any 1 here have a grey that wasn't so tame and now is???? Looking for some inspiration...
lovemyGreys
Well in theory the younger the bird the better, closer the bond.I have 2 handreared boys that i have a good bond with but i also have a 2 year old rescue who i have built up a bond with, with older greys it just takes more time & patience to develop that bond but it can be done, currently im working with my newest rescue who is roughly 5 & in time i will have gained his trust. 6 months is still very young & you will be able to build a great relationship with your bird. judygram
We have members here that have gotten older greys and they still bond with them. You are not going to gain this trust and bond overnight, it takes time and patience and some take longer than others. I would continue to work with yours, 6 months is not old by any means. BMustee
6 months is still a baby. Parrots will bond with a human at any age, some just take a little longer to bond with. When it comes to hand feeding and bonding it doesn't matter...the only thing that is different there is that when you get a baby when they are very young they don't need those few days to ajust to the new home, they are happy as long as there is food. There were a number of birds at my pet store that people gave to us because they couldn't care for them anymore and all of them are older birds. One was named Sunshine, a 4 year old B&G...I loved her sooo much and would have loved to have taken her home. She would "gurg" for me at least 4 times a day, so she must have loved me too. We clicked right off the bat, but there are a few that I must have grown on. Pattie is a 35 year-old Buffons and she LOVES me, but she didn't like me at first. Now I carry her all over the store with me and she loves to scare people when they walk by me. I could go on and on about the older birds and the love they give you, but the one thing I would like to say it their love is different. When you bond with a baby it seems like they love you as a parent...when an older bird loves you, your like the best friend they have been looking for all their life and that is one of the best feelings. When the day comes that I can take on another parrot I will probably get an older bird.
sumaya
wow great news..... thanks a lot. I feel we are bonding more, now that I bought a T stand and have her away from her cage.... I feel she isnt so intimidated now. I will keep trying, I really love parrots..I want my own aviary soon.... I live over seas so (healthy) parrots here are rare. I have 2 quakers that I have tamed. Hopefully more with in time......
spookyhurst
I adopted Nikko at the age of 4, and 2 years later she is very bonded with my family. She now allows us to touch her on most of her body, and loves it when the whole family sits on the couch with her. I think you can bond with a bird at any age. It just takes longer with older birds. LisaM
Kenya came into our lives when she was 12 years old. She would step up within a few days and would let me skritch her neck after about 3 weeks. She bonded very quickly to me but is still more aloof with the rest of the family. That is not uncommon though. She will step up onto any of my family members, but only because she wants them to bring her to me! :-) Lisa
