BMustee
Ok, so I live with my dad and he has decided to remodel the house a little bit. He's putting in new kitchen applinaces and countertops and now has decided to put in new flooring. Most of the house is going to get fake hardwood but not too far from my room he is going to put down new carpet. I'm going to be moving out and getting a place with my long time b/f but we have to wait till his lease is up in July, but I don't think my dad will wait till then. I don't know if the carpet he is getting has any toxic coating on it or not but I don't want to risk it, so what should I do to keep Elmo safe? Will being in another room with windows open be enough or will I need to get him out of the house?
perfectparrots
The following information was provided by www.parrotparrot.com The glue and other smells that are very strong after the installation of new carpet can be hazardous to birds. "I had two love birds and they were they sweetest things, they were the most loyal and affectionate birds I have had. Well, upon preparing our house to put it up for sale. We replaced the carpets....the morning after having our carpets replaced I found Annie and Allan side by side, dead on the bottom of their cage. We called the vet right away and found out the padding that is placed under the carpet is HIGHLY toxic to lovebirds. Please pass this on to anyone you know who has Lovebirds." (ParrotParrot note: the glue used to secure the pad is the most toxic element. New carpet should be shampooed and vacuumed a number of times and the room should be thoroughly aired out before birds are brought back into the house when new carpet is installed due to the strong formaldehyde smell they give off. The above item was one I found when researching this subject for my forum. If I were in your position, it would not be possible for me to move my parrots to another home whilst carpets were being fitted, so I would move them to another room with the door closed. I would close the door to the room where the new carpet was being fitted and then ensure that room is well aired like stated above.

BMustee
I'm not sure if I'll be able to move him ether. I'm thinking I'll put him outside at first and shampoo the carpets and make sure the windows are all open. If I can smell it at all though I'll have to sweet talk my b/f or sister and get them to let me keep him over there for a few days.
