Greys and other birds

Hi everyone, i just found this site today! Anyway... i have a 12 year old male congo and he came into our lives almost 2 months ago. He used to live with a Yellow Headed Amazon, they didn't bond or anything but were out of their cages at the same time, etc and pretty much ignored each other. I am thinking about getting another bird which i would like ot put in the same room and have it out at the same time as Doogie (the grey). Any suggestions on species? I have been thinking about a timneh, a lilac crowned amazon, or a quaker. Any tips, suggestions, etc. would be great. Thank you so much!

Welcome Fidmom: I have a 13 yr old grey and just last year we got a cockatoo and put the cages a few feet apart from day one. Slowly over tjhe last year they've gone from testing each other and being a little aggressive to actually developing their own play style together. I look for their friendship to improve at this rate.

That's my only first hand experience. But you never know each grey and other birds have their own personalities and attitudes.

I think many combos are possible.

Good luck

Thanks guys...

Well, as far as a "wish list". Just a sweet bird. Any age. Sweet, not too timid but not too brazen, either. I have 2 small dogs that i have walking around, Doogie stays on top on his cage. That is how i am hoping the new bird will be, otherwise i will have to let the birds out only when the dogs are in a separate room and that is hard on them, too. Not too noisy, either... i live in a rented condo. Cuddly would be nice, too. The only real MUST is not too noisy. Talkative is fine, but no screaming. I'll introduce myself more thoroughly soon, when i am using a computer that has my pictures in it. Thanks.

Hey Fidmom welcome to the forum.. Have you considered a bird rescue there are lots of birds that have been previously loved and for one reason or another there owners had to give them up. Not all rescue birds came from awful backgrounds.. Most are just looking for someone to love them again! Another plus is they can already tell you if the bird would fit with your family and its likes and dislikes.. Just a thought . I think its a neat idea its a ready made family member just add love!

Buy a bird for you. Don't worry about if the grey well "like" it. It if does that is a bonus.

TAG's are great birds. But so are Quakers. Do your reseach and then go see some birds. One might just pick you.

Parrots can be trained to stay off the floor. For the most part mine do unless they get spooked and take off.

Hi Pam,

I know many people that keep different species,as Tari said buy a bird for you, you can have the cages side by side from day one so they can adjust to being in each-others company. If you want them out together supervise them at all times,no-one can say if any two birds will get on,but I'm sure given time they will adjust & if they don't make friends they can learn to tolerate each other, but the other side of the coin they may hit off from the beginning.

Thanks for all the help and stories, guys! Yes, if I find another bird, it will be a previously owned bird, just like Doogie. So you think quakers and senegals are not too small, then? I will keep looking on craigslist and asking!

I have 2 CAG's and 2 DYH amazons that live in the same room and are always out together. The amazons are more sedentary than the greys and pretty much ignore them. they do all get along though. Do not get a conure if you want a quieter bird. all mine are VERY noisey.Darlings, but noisey. My amazons have one noisey time a day, around senset/dinner time otherwise they are very quiet well behaved birds. Mind you, they are 28.
