icegudi
Hey wonderful people. Just wanted to introduce myself and my bird, my name is Gudrun and my African Grey's name is Vaskur, we are from Iceland {Holidays-000200B2} Me and my boyfriend just got Vaskur about a month ago, we bought him in a pet store here in Iceland, they told us he is hand fed and that he comes from a breeder in Holland. He is now about 11 months and he is talking a lot, saying "Hallo" and "gugu", he also makes a lot of funny noises. Every time my face is close to his he leans over and kisses me, with his amazing real kissing sound, he also does it to my boyfriend. The other day I took him over to my parents and he kissed my mother and my brothers too, he is so polite {Love-000200D9} I have been around birds my whole life and I have been taking care of my brothers cockatiels for few years now (they are living here at the moment) and its always been my dream to have an African Grey. Its so amazing when dreams come true and make you feel like you are living in a dream... he is such a loving amazing bird and he fits so well into our tiny little loving family. I am very glad to have found this little community on the internet, everybody sounds so nice. I have been reading through the posts, there are so many helpful tips. But there is one funny thing Vaskur does, that I want to ask about. His cage is in our living room beside the sofa and when we put him in it in the evening and put his blanket on top, he always goes to the bottom of the cage and starts to dig with his feet. We use paper on the bottom and he digs through that and carries on digging... reminds me of Shawshank redemption :cheer: but he isn't really making a hole, just digging into nothing, does anyone know what he is up to? He doesn't even mind if we look under the blanket and ask him what he is doing, he just carries on minding his own business  Here is photo of him from the first day he came to live with us.

Post edited by: icegudi, at: 2008/01/31 16:
judygram
Hello Gudrun and welcome to the family, glad you could join us and I know you will love it here just like we do. From the picture you included, Vaskur is a beauty and no wonder you love him so much, they are awesome creatures and he seems so loving to anyone, not a lot of us can claim that statement. So you have already read thru a lot of the threads, I am sure you found lots of useful information and do not hesitate to ask specific questions as they arise, we do our best to get some answers and we will help you in any way we can. That scratching you described is normal behavior for a young grey, he may be wanting to be let out but he should cease this digging in time, nothing to worry about. Woody6
Welcome, your grey is beautiful. My greys do that when they want to come out again. It is their way of saying I do not want to go in the cage yet. Best to ignore it if you are putting him to bed for the night.
perfectparrots
Yes my Charlie does this also. He has done it since we brought him home at 16 weeks old. He is now 18months old now and does it less but still occassionally. Like others have said best to ignore it. Sorry forgot to say welcome. I am new to this forum also. icegudi
Thanks to all of you guys, I feel very welcome. And MazyAK, the name doesn't say everything... it's exceptionally cold in Iceland now and it is nowhere near as cold as it is in Alaska, according to the internet converter (cuz we have celcius here)it is 14°F here (-10°C)I would die of cold if I would go to Alaska. :silly:
MazyAK
Icegudi: You'd probably survive. We just pull the bird cages closer to the wood stove, and turn up the floor heat. Do you have any problems keeping yours warm? Today is the warmest in 10 days it's +2F. I'm going to have to find a temp. converter on the internet. We live 6 miles from the Canadian border with is also in Celsius. In fact us Americans are probably the only ones not on the Celsius. How stupid of us. Still waiting to see a picture of your baby. icegudi
MazyAK, I would probably be there right next to the stove with the birds, looking out at the nice scenery. I saw your photos of the northern lights, we have them here also, nice photo I found on flickr: We have no problems keeping our birds warm here, since the houses are exceptionally well built (with wool inside the walls)and double or triple glass in the windows. We are also blessed to live on this volcanic island, where we have a lot of hot water and we use it, especially the water that is far underground, to heat our houses. So inside is warm and cozy. I am so used to heat inside that when I lived in Spain for two years, I felt really cold inside in the winter because they have cool houses there because of the warm summers. I do have some more photos of my sweetheart(s)

MazyAK
Nice northern lights shot. We are truly blessed to have natures show. That's great about the volcanic heat for your house. How great is it to have free heat sources. Alaska has tons of hot springs also , but I'm not as fortunate as you to be able to harness it. Looks like Vaskur likes your boyfriend also. That's a bonus. My Mazy hasn't shown my wife much love at all. Real stand offish, but the last week things have changed and Mazy is really interested in spending more time with her. This sure has made my wife's cockatoo jealous though. We finally got over our subzero cold spell and are back to more snow but at least the temperature is tolerable. Speaking of which , it's time to go plow if off. Stay warm Vaskur. Bruce & Mazy
