You mean You Can Take your Bird With You?

I occasionally take Josey to work with me sometimes, she goes in a travel cage and remains in it while at work. Of course not too many people are in and out of my office during the day so she plays in her cage and keeps me company, sometimes I am there by myself.

I also take her with me when I go visit my son, it is about a 4 hour drive and she goes in the travel cage, she rides well and plays and talks on the way.

Some of the other members do take theirs to the malls, when shopping and even to parks. Maybe some of them will chime in with their outings.:P

I haven't taken Klaus anywhere yet, but plan to get a harness or adventure pack when the weather gets warm. I don't like being stuck in the house when it's nice outside.

Drs Foster & Smith carry both items, and I've seen the harnesses at the pet supply store.

I am totally planning on taking Juji lots of places this summer. If they are wearing a harness with a leash, it is plenty safe to go out and explore different settings. They should be in a carrier in the car so that you can drive safely, but once out of the car, have at it. :)

In my opinion Greys are not meant to be bystanders, they love being in every part of our lives. :)

I use the aviator bird harness for my greys. I have taken them to the park with me or down to the cabin or to the bird store to buy them toys and food and such. If we have them outside on a leash we need to be mindful of the types of predetor birds in the area. The only reason why I say that is because I used to take my greys to the cabin with me and let them be outside with me until I saw hawks flying around. That was enough for me not to take them to the cabin anymore. I did not want my babies grabbed by a predetor bird.

On other note, I know fellow bird owners who take their birds to the store or the mall. They create quite a crowd around them when they do because everyone is so facinated by it. I know I had quite a crowd around me when I took them to the park. My birds seemed fine with it as long as they were close to me and no one was trying to touch them.

  • 3 weeks later...

I used to take my eclectus practically everywhere with me, and I expect I'll do the same with my new baby when she comes home ~smiles~ I used an acrylic carrier with a perch that you could seatbelt in to the car, and a feather tether (useful but not easy to get on!) and I had a travel cage for him. He had a play perch in my office (when I had a job where I could take him along a few days a week). He LOVED the car, would chirp and sing and dance the entire time. He loved being out among people, was always on his best behavior. But, as I always said about him, wouldn't YOU be on your best behavior if everybody who saw you stopped to tell you how gorgeous you are? I know I would! Hehehehe

Obviously my new baby will have a different personality and different needs than my boy did, but I really felt like taking him out and about was good for him, and I plan to do it with Jenna as well, slowly, and paying attention to her responses and needs to make sure she feels safe.

I plan on doing something as well. The harness not so sure about though with SweetHeart. She might bite my hand off lol. Wish I would have gotten her a little younger, but patience lol. Will have to work on that little by little, maybe one day I can take her out.

As for Our little Goffin Cockatoo Casper that we will be getting shortly I plan on starting with him as soon as we get him. He will be about 10 weeks old when we get him.

I brought my lil guy to the beach today.. the tourists absolutely ADORED him! I had about TEN people come up to me and ask about him and to take photos! He was really calm the whole time (he is quite the camera ham), but he didn't like the sand much cuz his feet kept sinking into it.

As far as i know, most birds are fine outdoors so long as they are near you i.e. on your shoulder. But bear in mind, clipped or unclipped, one sudden shock is all that's needed to startle your bird into flight mode! My baby's clipped, and got so excited by the waves that he jumped right into it and started floundering around. I totally freaked out and grabbed him right out of the water cos i thought he was gonna drown, but after the initial, verrrry WET shock, he seemed quite cheerful! Mine likes getting out and about, and comes home completely pooped, but happy.
