homemade toys

Does anyone have "how-to" on how to build grey toys & sizing guidelines at home? LuLu destroys toys on a weekly basis and I really have to find a better way of keeping on top of her toy needs.

When I purchased LuLu, my best friend, gave me a gift certificate to a bird shop. I have bought LuLu her last two cages and all her toys on the gift certificate. I have $75 remaining on the certificate and I see all the toy findings there so I think I will buy the parts there but need info on what to do about assembly and all that jazz. I have also disassembled many of the toys she has already destroyed so that I have the hardware for new assemblies.

Hi Kathy, i have 4 greys so i tend to make all my toys.

I keep all my plastic tops of soft drinks, toilet rolls.I buy straws , childrens building bricks, pieces of leather (undyed, natural )etc..

I have put a link here for you on toys & if you read through it, it has some great links for toy making ideas.

I make most of our birds' toys, and have a lot of toy parts to choose from. I like refillable toys, like the SS "fun rings" (Rose's Pet Emporium and other places carry them) and skewers. You just slide on a variety of toy parts, and hang it up. Quick and easy. You can get toy ideas lots of places, by looking around bird toy companies web sites for one.

There are some good ideas in the Parrot Enrichment Actvitiy Book (on-line). Click near the bottom right corner to download this book:

Happy toy making!

In addition to the occasional "store bought" toy (he has a few which I rotate, buy a new one maybe once every two months. Expensive!) I give Klaus

Empty, rinsed yogurt containers

Clean, empty margarine containers

Plastic bottle tops, plus the "rings" that come on milk bottles

A coffee filter with a treat twisted up in it

A paper towel roll, cut to size with a treat in it and ends crimped shut

Little plastic toys courtesy of my young son

Little balls with bells in them (meant for cats, very cheap)

A pen with "innards" removed

Q-tips

That's just a few!
