Is garlic ok?

Romo really likes garlic! I have a large bowl on the kitchen counter that has nuts in it, and a couple of bulbs of fresh garlic. Romo will fly over and grab an almond or walnut, but he also bites into the garlic frequently and really seems to enjoy it. Then of course, he wants to give me garlic kisses!

I've stopped him from really eating it, because I wanted to make sure it won't hurt him.

Romo was really cuddly tonight, and I took him picture - I'll try to attach it to this post! romocuddling3.jpg

Be careful with large amounts of raw garlic. Another user here lost their bird and it was suspected that eating a whole bulb of raw garlic may have been the cause of death. In general, garlic in small quantities is probably OK. But if you have eaten it raw you know it is kind of harsh. If the bird ate a lot and filled up its crop it is possible it could be toxic. So, I would not freak out if they eat a bit, but I would not allow them to eat raw garlic in general. Search the forum on "garlic" and you should be able to find the thread discussing another owners experience, along with a debate about garlic in general. ;)

OMG! Thanks so much for the quick response! I'll be sure to move the garlic so he doesn't have such easy access to it. I've always heard that garlic is healthy for people, as well as animals, so it never really occurred to me that it could be BAD!:(

It is okay to feed SMALL amounts of garlic. I occasionally mix in one small clove, very finely minced, into the fresh mix that lasts for 3 days, 3 parrots. So each parrot gets 1/3 of a small clove over 3 days. That amount is fine. I don't feed it all the time, once every few weeks maybe. A whole clove or big chunks, probably not good.
