HoboHiltons
Are Quakers good talkers? How old are they normally before the do begin to talk? Romo is a wonderful part of our family.. he is very affectionate and playful. I am curious to know more about how well they speak and how old they normally are before they begin to speak more often. I have heard that Quakers are in the top 10 of speaking birds... but have never spoken to anyone who raises them. Any information yall can share would be greatly appreciated!! thanxxx
Tari
Yes they can talk but that don't mean they well. My three blue quakers (that are still here. lol) All started talking around 8 weeks old. They would say more things I am sure if they had their own homes. But because they are in the same cage and I don't spend a lot of time with them (don't want to get to attached) They only say a few things. Just your basics. Step up, Good bird, Pretty bird and hello are about all I have heard from them. They are in the top five for talking. The only way to ensure a bird well talk is to buy one that already does. But even so don't mean it wont get to your home and stop.
Ronda477
Our Quaker we got when she was 3, she was very abused when we got her. She did talk pretty good than and now that she is 12 she is even better. She says many phrases. She is the only one we have though besides our TAG right now. But she seems to pick up on what she wants to, the things I try to get her to say she won't say lol.
judygram
Isn't that the way it always is Ronda, just like a kid, the more I hear about these quakers the more I want one, a blue one:whistle:
Ronda477
LOL I don't know Judy, I'll tell you she can squawk up a dang storm! And not soo much that, cause I mean after all we are getting a cockatoo lol, but she does it when you really really don't want her to! LOL So yes just like kids! When your on an important phone call lol and she can talk you know she can, cause she talks to you all day long! Than when the phone rings all she does is run back and forth on her perch yelling lol. I have heard Tari say though that the blue ones are a little calmer. Bad thing is hehehe Is the one thing I have been trying to teach Molly for the past 9 years she won't say! So I told my husband Jessie that I will get SweetHeart to say it to her! lol
judygram
They are cute but maybe I should just stop with what I got because Josey is relatively quiet but Sunny can scream sometimes and once in a while she does it right in my ear (ringing):pinch: :pinch:
Ronda477
lol if you don't want screaming than a quaker probably isn't your best choice lol
Tari
Strangely enough Topaz never screams. From time to time Dandy well but only cause the cat got to close to his cage. lol The breeder pair on the other hand...
judygram
I guess it is just like the other species, you have some that will and some that won't, it would be my luck that the one I got would and big time.:pinch:
Ronda477
Yes I'll have to video what Molly does lol. It's something. For the most part she will be quit and than she gets into her talking spree, but than she has her screaming spree lol and just runs back and forth on her perch lol. Can be very annoying lol. I think part of her problem is she didn't know any different like I said this was the bird we got for free cause she came from a woman who abused her and couldn't stand her. So she has issues lol
judygram
That is so sad that she was abused but glad you could give her a good home and it is hard to tell whether or not that has anything to do with her behavior.
Ronda477
Well being kept in a dark stair well of a basement and when she was out getting flicked in the head probably didn't help her at all. It was very sad. I can't believe actually she had never picked before we got her. Now she has just started picking her chest a bit, but never thought that it could be a molt cause it's not bare just less than there was. We switched her cage and got sweetheart all at the same time, but that was 4 months ago, so don't know. Will just have to take care of the little green witch lol. vaya_the_elf
Have 4yr old Quaker, who does says couple of phrases, likes to make noises more so. They are know to be pretty loud sometimes though, so as long as you don't mind that.
Tari
Known to be loud? No not really. Mine do chat a lot. But they talk they do not scream. They only scream if something is wrong. And right now I have three in the house and still not loud. Noisy sometimes but not loud. Macaw's are loud, Too's are loud. Amazone's are loud. lol Quakers just like to be noisy. lol Mine have started to sing. Itsy Bitsy Quaker and Buster (the Baby that is still here) Started saying I love you and Want to come out. So funny when he says Want to come out he usally says Step up right behind it then Good bird. He is very smart bird. :woohoo: I am so going to miss him when he goes to a forever home. judygram
I don't know how you do it Tari, have those babies in your house interacting with them every day and be able to let go of them especially after them talking to you and saying I love you, my heart would melt and I would have to keep them. Ronda477
Judy I caught on tape what my quaker does all the time lol. I will have to put it on youtube and give you the link lol. I don't know how she does it either! I would want all the babies!! And to think we are actually thinking of doing that! lol We are making a little film of SweetHeart too, so look for my post with all my little fids in it! Tari
It is going to be really hard with this last one cause I have had it for so long. But if I keep it I would have to rehome the breeder pair and not have any more babies. I so enjoy my babies. Watching them grow. Hearing the first words.....
