Ankle band came off

Hi everyone,

 

Bella's ankle band slid off her leg today. Has anyone had this happen and if so - what did you do? I'm not really sure what these bands are used for other then to identify our birds and document where they were bred. Should I attempt to have this put back on by the vet?

Since it came off w/o any problem leave it off. Keep the band(s) with other documents etc you may have on Bella. Its probably better with the band(s) off anyways as some birds get them caught/stuck on things in cage etc and this can cause injuries.

Thanks! It almost came off one time before - she got one toe through. I was able to slid it back on. But she's grown since then, and today she got that toe through again, and the only way to fix this was to slid the band the rest of the way off. Her talon is too long now to have slid it back through.

 

I'll hang on to it and keep it with the rest of my documents for her.

Mark is right, do not put it back on but keep it with any documents you may have for her. I never had Josey's put on her leg but I have it in a drawer. I have heard of some horror stories concerning those bands and chose to leave it off of her.

Nikko didn't have one when I adopted her, but if she had, I think I would have had it cut off.

I cant tell if Duke's bothers him. the past 6 month or so he lifts his leg and puts the band in his beak and makes clicking noises with it somehow. He enjoys getting his head scratched while doing this.

Terri as the others have said leave it off, my two boys dont have leg rings, they are micro chipped, but my other two do.Coco my female scares the hell out of me as she plays so rough im worried she may get it tangled They are fitted here solely for identification purposes by the breeders.

Thank you all for the reassurance. Bella's skin is discolored from where that silly band was on. I want to take Jiggy's off, but I'm not sure how best to do that. He is so tiny and his seems to be on much tighter then Bella's was. I don't think I can get an instrument in there to get it off.

Dont try remove the band(s) yourself as this could easily result in a broken leg or injury. If you want it removed, have a qualified avian vet do it. B)

You bet! We have an appointment next week with the Avian vet to do some initial blood work - I'll mention it to him.

I wouldn't worry about it! I know that when I took my Sun Conure to the vet, she had a leg band on, and the vet recommended removing it anyway. She said if you're worried about identifying her, have her microchipped. Legbands can get caught on toys while you're at work and break the birds leg or seriously injure them, so I said ok sounds good!

I removed Ned's myself and it wasn't too hard but I work with hand tools all day at work as a mechanic.

I'd recommend the vet approach to anyone else. I think

Ned's happier without it - I know I am. I'm saving it though as it has the breeders number on it for Ned.
