Mgoertzen5,

Plucking can be complex so we will need more info to try and help. You mention Mango is 10 yrs old but you have only had her for 2 months. What were the circumstances in her life prior to you having her? Do you know if she plucked before you had her? The new living circumstances and change may well be playing a role in the plucking. Of course, it is usually also important to rule out health related issues by a vet. However, in many cases plucking is a result of some emotional/psychological issues. If you provide more information we may be able to help you get to the bottom of the issues.

Let us know. There are many people here with experience that can likely provide suggestion. Again, one thing to consider is ruling out any medical issues. I hope with a little time and investigation you can help Mango overcome whatever is causing the current plucking you mention.

First of all is she plucking here down feathers or her top feathers. Second is there anything that you have done to change her normal routine in your house. The move alone is enough to make them start to pluck. The leading cause of plucking is STRESS and being NERVOUS. This could be a reason for a trip to your AVAIN VET not just a regular vet. For the bath question if you bird is plucking you might want to lay off the bath for a while. Baths make birds preen and they will pull unwanted feathers when they are preening. But if you must give a bath you should give them a bath at least twice a week. Just whatch out for the preening. Try to give her something to play with when she is in the cage. This will take her mind off the plucking. You will need to also handle her alot more to also deture her from plucking. If this behavior continues you really need for the vet to check her out, and she might need to be put on prosac to calm her down a little bit.

Mgoertzen5, you really need to have Mango seen and evaluated by an avian vet to rule out any physical reasons for the plucking. But the change in owners is enough to make them start and stress is the number one reason. But rule out any medical reasons first then we can tackle the other possibilities.
