Baby grey biting

I'm new here and a new Baby Grey Congo owner. I got my grey a month ago and he's eating solid food already. He to his first flight two days ago. He flys to me when I call him. But when he gets to me, He bites ( Not Hard) and nibbles on my hand. Is this normal? I think he might start to bite harder as he gets older. Does anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance.

A bird's beak is like their hand...it's what they explore with. Harder bites are a different story, there's lots of info on here if you search (there's even a "Bite Me" club, of which I'm a card-carrying member! :) )

The best advice I can give as far as avoiding bites is not to cause them. You can "not cause" them by always remaining calm around the bird, don't startle him. Approach with your hand from the side/back (never the top/front - predators approach this way and a bird will instinctively go into "defense" mode). If your bird seems bothered by something you're doing (read his body language, you'll know) discontinue if possible. Try to achieve a balance of mutual respect.

That's my 2 cents!

Thanks, he does not seem to be bothered by anything I do. He will let me cuddle, come at him and from the front like you say not to do. I can pretty much handle him anyway. But he just likes to nibble and I think he will nibble harder. I will do a search and read as much as I can. This is the first Bird I have ever hand fed. I am amazed at how fast he grew and that he learned to fly so quickly. The breeder is also shocked. I will try to post pics. Thanks again for the help.

Eddie, my Josey nibbles on my fingers also especially when she was a baby, she is 18 months old now, and that is just her exploring her world. She has never really bitten me at least not yet, but they use their beak like we do a hand. I wouldn't worry about the bites becoming harder, I doubt it. In fact, I was playing with Josey the other day with my hand under my shirt and she was going after it and biting my hand but when I removed my hand from underneath the shirt she continued to bite my hand but she lightened up on the pressure.

If you haven't already done so, please introduce yourself in the welcome room and tell us a little more about yourself and this new grey, like what is his name?

Eddie my Josey is doing the exact same thing, scratching like a chicken, they all do that and I don't know why but it is normal behavior. Don't worry that your baby is nuts, he's just a normal little fellow and do enjoy him at this stage for he is only a baby once but he will be a lifelong companion you won't want to be without.:)

Hello Eddie and Bamboo,

What a nice name for him. You little guy there is using that beak as a arm to grab things. Ziggy has to use that beak for everything he touches. That includes me he dont put no pressure down unless he is falling. They have a great sence of taste and they love to taste everything. I would not be to worried about it. If it gets worse you have another thing to worry about. I think you are in the clear. Hes a baby right? Well I dont know if you have any kids but I do I have 4 and everyone of them put everything right in there mouth. So in the sence of age your baby is tasting his new world. HAHAHA!!!!! Just sit back and relax your bird is following in the footsteps of all babies.

It sounds like he is just nibbling, not biting, but you don't want it to escalate in the future. One thing you could try is holding a foot toy of some kind in your hand, and putting that in front of his beak so he chews on the toy, not your flesh. Your bird also can learn what "no bite" means. These Greys are very smart and they do learn quickly if you're consistent.
