sandra902
hello i am wondering if wine corks (natural ones not the plastic stopper kind) pose a problem to greys. i did a search of this site and came up with zero results. mr merlin loves to destroy his toys and since i have a great number of wine corks (i offer no explanation as to WHY) i thought maybe if i strung them along with leather and beads he might get a bang out of destroying them too. let me know if i should not do this otherwise i'm getting out the drill and having a ball!. i find i have to rebuild his toy almost every day and he is always very interested in watching me do this. so at least i've found something we can do together. stay warm and dry we are in the midst of a slush and ice storm here in the midwest. MakenasDad
I know that wine corks are actually soaked in a peroxide solution to kill off bacteria so the wine does not get spoiled. I'm not sure of the effect this would have on a bird, or to the amounts used. I know this is done in the US, but not sure about other countries, anyone else know? ziggy
Hello Andrew, Cork from all over the world are soaked in the peroxide to kill the bacteria. I would not give any of my birds cork. The cork we have for wine bottles also have Glue of some sort to keep them if the form. Most good pet shops sell all natural cork ( at least around here anyway) If you were to give him cork I would give him the all natural one instead of the wine ones. I cant really see the reason to give them cork anyway. When they play with it, it is going to be in pieces that could get caught in there throught and might cause problems. I think you need to give them more bird and kid friendly toys. ( plastics, woods ect) Me personally would not take the chance with it. It will also make such a mess around the cage. sandra902
ooohh good point about the peroxide, i did not know that...glad i asked! and as far as the bits all over, well, we call this the monkey house anyway so i guess i wasn't too worried about bits. not to mention he throws food around anyway so i'm constantly sweeping up anyhow...but yes those little bits could get stuck in his throat. glad i asked! i'll just make trivets then.
