Kaedyn
I know that there have been a lot of recent reports saying that toner dust from laser printers or copiers is not healthy for humans. I'm sure if it's not safe for us, it's also not safe for our animal friends. I try to limit my own and my birds exposure to the printer, but was wondering if anyone has any evidence that it's more toxic to birds than other creatures? Basically, should I be even more cautious? Does anyone keep or allow their birds in the same room as their printer or copier? -Kaedyn
jimmycoop2005
I am worried about everything. I go by the saying "better safe than sorry" we have a copier in the very next room but he isn't near it most of the time, especially when it is printing. Usually like you said though if it isn't safe for us then it isn't safe for animals.
Laurie
I'm in the copier & printer biz, and we've sent out lots of MSDS on the stuff. I'm no expert, but of course breathing it is bad for you. Because the birds have so much more of a delicate system than humans, I think it's safe to say it would be very bad for them. The only real danger, though, is if a cartridge is bad and leaks toner. A good, working cartridge will only put toner on the page, not let it float around loose. Hope that helps a little...
mas
Hi Kaedyn certain toner is regarded as a group 2A Carcinogen. Which means: Group 2A: the agent (mixture) is probably carcinogenic to humans. The exposure circumstance entails exposures that are probably carcinogenic to humans. but this was in the past, i think nowadays they dont make toner with the same formula. i may be subject to correction though, its just what I have heard since i work in a company that supplies toner and cartridges and one of our suppliers has told me that! judygram
Thanks Mas for the information, I was wondering myself, lets hope they don't use the same formula. Be sure to let us know if you find out anything new.

Kaedyn
Thanks all! I appreciate all the replies. I would just switch back to an inkjet, but I've just never had the same luck with those as I have the lasers. I keep a HEPA filter in the bird room, which might help with the dust. -Kaedyn
judygram
HEPA filter sounds like a good idea.
