jimmycoop2005
What do you guys use? I have tried carrots, bananas, and sunflower seeds. He didn't like the bananas the carrots take too long and he wouldn't eat the seeds...
Jane08
We use cheese (small amounts),sunflower seeds, granite apples (I think those are pomegranate in English), rice crackers which he loves. Pull those big ones out of the cupboard and he is over so fast. We also use a type of biscuit, pepper biscuit. I also use myslef as a treat. When my boyfriend trains him I stand beside him and when the bird does the right thing he gets to come to me for a cuddle.I then put him pack on the pearch and we start again. It is so funny when he is on his pearch waving his foot telling my boyfirend to hurry up I want to get to her. We also use toys.

Guest briansmum
i used to use shelled sunflower seeds but now i use pomegranite seeds, i buy them already removed from the fruit in a tub from the supermarket and he loves them. probably because he only gets them when we're training so i can keep a close eye on where he's flinging them
chapala
I use tiny pieces of nuts, so an almond would be cut into maybe 6 pieces, a half walnut cut into even more. The idea is to give them a tiny, special treat, and around here, nuts are the best!
judygram
Jimmy, it is just a simple matter of finding out what he likes to eat most and using that as a training treat. Josey loves cheese as most of them do, and shelled unsalted peanuts, so whatever he goes nuts over is what you use for treats.
lovemyGreys
i use pine nuts or tiny pieces of cheese, as Judy rightly said it's just a matter of finding what he likes.
jimmycoop2005
I know, I was just looking for ideas to find out what he likes. I have tried a few things. Never thought of cheese though, I was told strictly no dairy. The almonds he may like. He is on an all pellet diet, the roudybush (sp) so I figured he would like a lot of things. I'm not going to take him off of the rb though.
Kibibi
I use a spoon dipped in peanut butter ... and yes I know it isn't the healthiest treat out there. She gets a quick swipe off of it. You can easily control how much she gets per swipe by the amount that you place on the spoon.
Guest briansmum
i'm beginning to think theres something wrong with brian, he doesnt like nuts, won't touch them. except maybe a pistachio in a sealed shell if we have a bag... strange bird LOL

Makena
Everyone is right, you just have to find out what he likes. It will take time. For Makena it is dried noodles or popcorn... He is obsessed with both! All I have to is rustle the noodle bag and he is ready to do anything I want him to :P Some people give their birds dairy, we choose not too as they can't digest it. They are lactose intolerant. It's your choice. We also don't give peanuts or peanut butter due to being paranoid about aflatoxins. Maybe we are a little tooooooo paranoid!! Beccy, Mak is the same way. He is completely uninterested in nuts...LOL! I offered him a pecan when I was making a pie and he didn't want any part of it! Guest briansmum
yes jimmy, try everything (providing its not harmful) an you will soon find out what works and what doesn't. like makena, i too choose not not feed dairy to brian, with the exception of a spoonful of scrambled egg with shell once a week. i tried vegan cheese, but he didnt like it
judygram
I know they cannot handle dairy but a lot of the members do give a little cheddar cheese occasionally to their greys, it may be more tolerated for some reason, I don't know why. jimmycoop2005
Oh okay, I was just wondering. I will probably try some healthy treats for him. Thanks for all the ideas
chapala
Just wanted to say that your bird could really use some fresh food (mostly the nutritious vegetables and some fruit) as a healthy addition to an all pellet diet. I feed no more than 20% pellets in my birds' diet, and they are in fabulous health. The few times they have been seen by a vet (our Military had an injury, not an illness), they remark about how wonderful they look and ask me a lot of questions about what I feed. If you're interested in diet ideas, just ask! Reta
TinyTimneh
well, if he really likes the carrots, use those. i think the mistake you are making is giving him a whole carrot. my dog training experience dictates you never give the animal such large peice he actually has to take time to chew it all and eat it. a tiny portion your grey can instantly gobble is more effective (plus more motivating to focus on you and continue doing what you ask because he only gets a teaser taste). also, remove that item from your grey's diet so it's even more effective because it's something he loves but never gets. also try some variety, mebbe pick two or three treats so your grey is motivated to keep going (after all, yes, sunflower seeds r good, but after the first twenty they lose their appeal). keep the portion to about the size of a half a penny or even smaller than give him a good big chunk when the session's over. good luck! ziggy
Jimmy, every bird will have a favorite treat. Unless you have Ziggy he is a garbage can. Mangos, nuts, brocolli, snow peas, banana chips, peachs, apples, spinach the list goes on and on. You need to figure out what he likes and use that. You should also be giving him fresh veggies,a and fruit to give him a vitamin boost. In there natural enviroment they feed on many differant items. I for one am a believer of differant foods everyday, just like with humans to much of one thing is no good. You need to give him a good veriaty of differant foods to keep him active and to keep him happy with his food. Keep trying you will get the answer soon enough from him. He will let you know what he likes and dislikes. For use to say what is the best treat would be foolish, he needs to make the disishion. We can give you advise thats all, put it all comes down to what is he going to be happy with.

Post edited by: ziggy, at: 2007/12/04 06:
jimmycoop2005
Thanks guys yeah I was just kind of looking for more ideas on what to give him. I have been told if I am eating something give him a bite. I was eating a banana the other day and tore some of the bottom in a small chuck and he just made a mess with it. I then smashed it up with my fingers and rubbed it on my finger and he loved it! I am getting some unsalted peanuts soon to try for him.
