birdhouse
Friday night Hurricane Harvey originally made landfall. Here it is Wednesday morning, a second landfall & more rain forecast in a few days. Dams have failed & the flooding will be an ongoing issue for quite a while yet. There aren't even words for this. People are sheltering in place through all of this. So, the numbers really aren't going to begin to get real for days more yet. And the numbers are already staggering. So whenever the emergency organizations can get an accurate assessment, I'm guessing they're going to be unprecedented. Lot's of people automatically give to the Red Cross for things like this. If that's your choice, please consider donating thru the *Google *site *to *effect *their *donation *matching*. You can make your effort go even further. Lots of people don't like the Red Cross for a variety of reasons. Fair enough. I've rounded up some legit websites. There are plenty of alternatives. These are just a few to consider for both short & long term support. ANIMALS NEED HELP TOO The vid of the man who was evacuating w/a B&G on his shoulder. The horses standing flank deep in water. The little herd of cows slopping around, looking sad & confused. They break my heart because they're nothing compared w/what is actually going on or what will come. People do need our help. But please remember, so do they. You could start w/Greywing's sanctuary (just a suggestion"). At the bottom of the page, there's a payPal link for donations. http://www.gulfcoastexoticbirdsanctuary.com/ https://spca.org/give https://redrover.org/program/redrover-responders http://www.americanhumane.org/ http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/animal_rescue/relief.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/ ' http://code3associates.org/ Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of NM Anna 505-994-0505 http://www.greenpeople.org/listing/Macaw-Cockatoo-Rescue-62574.cfm https://bestfriends.org/ http://www.floridadisaster.org/petplan.htm https://www.ready.gov/animals https://www.cdc.gov/features/petsanddisasters/index.html https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/general-pet-care/disaster-preparedness http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/groups-dedicated-to-saving-animals-in-disaster-situations/ Google will match your Red Cross donation up to $1mil. Greywings
Also Gulf Coast Exotic Bird Sanctuary we were hit hard with floodwaters Waded in Saturday morning to rescue dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, ferret, chickens the amazing neighbors who are managing Prestige storage next door are housing the rescued ark feeding us and giving us dry clothes. Amazing couple even helping clean and feed. Wonderful groups donating feed and water. The floods are retreating now so clean up is the next job. Got to haul out all the sodden bedding and start fresh and disinfect. It is an experience to be dodging minnows indoors. Very sore and tired covered with fire ant bites but grateful to have most of our residents safe. Our home was spared so fortunate are we. Thank you Birdhouse for adding our local sanctuary. birdhouse
I saw vids of fire ants rafts. Ugh! We had a hornet problem in the aftermath of my first serious hurricane here. These are the types of things you don't see coming & frankly just don't need to add to everything else. I'm so glad your home made it through. But it sounds like the sanctuary has a lot of love helping it recover. How's everything going there & in general? * BTW, anyone who wants to add to the list of relief organizations, please go for it! This area is going to need a ton of support for a long time to come. * Edited September 4, 2017 by birdhouse
Greywings
Heavy labor now the water has receded to almost normal levels at the sanctuary. Slogging through sticky deep mud to get feed and clean water to the birds still in some of our tallest aviaries. Trying to muck out the old sodden hay and shavings we used as cage bedding heavy with muck and water. Taking it down to bare mud hoping to get some clean sand donated to give us a fresh start and avoid mold developing if we place hay or shaving on such wet ground. We have had many step up to donate bags of food, perches, water kitty litter and have had some wonderful people volunteer their efforts to get two of our aviaries mucked out. The chickens are back outside as are the bunnies that is a start. Thanks to everyone for kind thoughts and emotional support especially Lisa and Pat and Birdhouse. birdhouse
Sounds like things are going as well as can be expected. That's so good to hear! Hope everything continues to go as well. I absolutely hate to say this, but as it stands now Harvey may only have been the opening act for this year's hurricane season. It certainly looks as though Irma could be all that Harvey was & then some. That's a lot of people with shattered lives. Good thing we're a lot of people who can help, right? Just added Team Rubicon to the list. I only just heard about them when I signed into my Microsoft acct this am. There was a pop up about Microsoft's contribution to the Hurricane Harvey recovery process which mentions Team Rubicon. They're an NGO nonprofit who utilize military vets & their experience to aid in disaster relief efforts. You can read more in this CNBC piece. https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/05/team-rubicon-military-vets-raising-millions-to-help-harvey-victims.html
BaileysPapa
Here in Florida, we're getting ready for Irma. Looking like it could pass us by, or could be worst storm in recorded history. Nice choice!? End of the World conspiracies, anyone ? 8) (Just trying to make light of a terrible situation.)

birdhouse
Here in Florida, we're getting ready for Irma. Looking like it could pass us by, or could be worst storm in recorded history. Nice choice!? End of the World conspiracies, anyone ? 8) (Just trying to make light of a terrible situation.) Gallows humor. A time honored tradition for dealing w/the worst of the worst things humans face. I don't think anyone could say you weren't entitled. The entirety of Florida excepting the panhandle is apparently going to take it in the teeth. It's very realistic to project that by this time next week there could be a swath of destruction from Corpus Christi to Raleigh. With two hurricanes down, two hurricanes on deck & two months of hurricane season more to weather. Texas may end up being the "lucky ones" when it's all said & done. How horrifying is that? birdhouse
This is like the nightmare where you're trying to stop someone from being hit by a train but your feet won't move & no sound will come. So far it's been brutal & it's only going to get worse.

birdhouse
And it's not the only one. I feel so badly for all those poor people but those who will be getting run over twice in a matter of days no less...! This is a nightmare. birdhouse
Think I think I found the B&G I was worried about at the Delco Center in East Austin (slide #20). I originally saw a few seconds of a man w/a B&G being loaded into a boat. Then a few day later a totally different evacuation piece had a split second of wings spreading, far behind a reporter's head that I just felt like was them. Sounds a little obsessive I guess, but I've been thinking about them ever since. Wish they'd found a more comfortable place to land. But real glad they're apparently safe & sound. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/harvey-wild-animals_us_59a7102ee4b0a8d14572bd50?slideshow=true#gallery/59a7446ae4b010ca289a197a/

kittykittykitty
Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, Maria all have made their mark this season. Thank you for all the websites and info. The news has centered on the more heavily populated areas but what has happened and is happening to the birds and other animals of the smaller islands in the Caribbean? Some of these islands have had total destruction of their infrastructure. Who is helping them?
